Arizona Diamondbacks vs Atlanta Braves Analysis
The Atlanta Braves take on the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase field in the last game of a 3-game set. The home team has taken the first two games, and the visitors hope to get off the schneid here in game three. Right hander Kyle Wright goes against southpaw Madison Bumgarner.
Braves Betting Preview
Although their bullpen is 8th best in baseball with a staff ERA of 3.40, the Braves firemen blew a 6-2 lead Tuesday night and lost 8-7.
These kind of nights will happen and Atlanta is the defending World Champs, so I’m not too concerned about this club’s relievers.
Starter Kyle Wright has pitched well this year with a 2.68 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP in nine starts in 53.2 innings.
He’s given up 18 walks, which is a shade over three free passes per nine innings, allowed just three home runs and struck out 61. That’s a very healthy rate of over one strikeout per inning.
Diamondbacks Betting Preview
The D-Backs have played better baseball as the season has progressed, and are now 25-26. That’s almost half the victories from last year’s 51 win campaign.
Although they’re in the bottom 1/3 in baseball for both OPS and ERA, Arizona has relied on home runs to get enough offense to win games. They’re tied with the Dodgers for the sixth most long flies in MLB at 59.
Madison Bumgarner has given up 2, 3, 4, and 5 earned runs in his last four starts and five home runs in his last two. This was after his May 4th start in Miami where he got ejected after an inning for having too much of a foreign substance on his hands.
While we don’t know for sure if MadBum was trying to get an edge in that start, it reminds me of the old saying: “If it looks, walks and quacks like a duck, it’s probably a duck.”
It looks like the veteran has used Spider-Tac or similar substance to improve his performance. And when he can’t use it, well, bad things tend to happen – at least they have in his last two starts.
Arizona Diamondbacks vs Atlanta Braves Prediction
I think the Braves have an edge in starting pitching, and are due for some positive regression on the road. Atlanta will want Wright to eat innings and get into the 6th or 7th, and he’s gone at least six frames in six of his nine starts.
MadBum has trended downward his last few starts, and going against the defending world champs probably isn’t the start he’ll get his issues fixed.
While I think the Braves bullpen is due for a bounce back, I’ll limit the risk and go with Atlanta on the 1st 5 innings run line.
Prediction: Braves 1st 5 Innings Run Line (-0.5)
