Arizona Diamondbacks vs Cincinnati Reds Analysis
The Cincinnati Reds play the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field in the second of a three game series. The Reds got a 5-4 win in Monday’s game one, and it’ll be a battle of right-handers tonight with Tyler Mahle (2-5, 5.07 ERA and 74Ks) going against Zach Davies (2-3, 4.21 ERA and 50Ks).
Cincinnati has a 22-39 record, last in the NL Central – while Arizona has a 29-34 record that’s good for 4th in a really tough NL West.
These two pitchers faced each other in Cincinnati just five days ago on June 9th, where they both went 6.0 innings. Davis gave up three earned runs, Mahle allowed just one earned run and struck out 10 Diamondbacks – but Arizona got the win.
Cincinnati Reds Betting Preview
Although his season long numbers aren’t that impressive, Tyler Mahle has pitched pretty well the last few games.
In his last three starts he’s only given up four runs in 18.2 innings – however, the Reds lost all three of those games.
The Reds righty also has a 30.7% Whiff Rate on his fastball, and his strikeout rate is 10.1 Ks per nine innings. This is a good matchup against an Arizona lineup that has the 3rd highest K rate in MLB.
Meanwhile, the Reds lineup has improved over the last couple of weeks. Cincinnati has a team batting average of .300 in their last 10 games, along with a 9th best OPS in their last 10 games against righties of .756 and a batting average of .279.
Arizona Diamondbacks Betting Preview
The Diamondbacks haven’t played well lately, going 3-7 in their last 10 games, hitting only .216 overall. And against right-handers the last 10 games they have an OPS of .588 and a team average of .194 – that’s below the Mendoza line.
Starter Zach Davies has been about average for Arizona this season. In 12 starts and 62 innings he has a 4.21 ERA, a 1.24 WHIP and struck out 50.
He hasn’t been what you’d call an “innings eater” to go deep into games, but he did go 7.0 and 6.0 innings in his last two starts against the Pirates and the Reds.
Arizona Diamondbacks vs Cincinnati Reds Prediction
This is a good matchup of starting pitchers and I think the run total is just about right. Both bullpens are in the bottom six in baseball, and I have a hard time trusting either of them for a full game wager.
I like the matchup of a high strikeout pitcher like Mahle going against a K-prone team like the D-Backs. That’s why I’ll take Mahle over 5.5 strikeouts.
Prediction: Tyler Mahle Over 5.5 Strikeouts
