Arizona Diamondbacks vs Detroit Tigers Analysis
The Detroit Tigers travel to Chase Field to take on the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first of a three game weekend series.
It’s a right-handed showdown in the desert as Rony Garcia gets the start against Merrill Kelly. The Snakes are a -165 home favorite and the Tigers are a +140 road dog, the run total is 8.5
Detroit Tigers Betting Preview
Detroit is coming off a three game sweep in Boston, while Arizona dropped three in San Diego. The Tigers are 26-43 and 4th in the AL Central, 12.0 games behind Cleveland. The D-Backs are a better-than-expected 32-39, 4th in the NL West and 12.5 games behind the Dodgers.
Outside of veteran Miguel Cabrera, there aren’t many bright spots in the Tigers lineup. Detroit only averages 2.87 runs per game and has a .608 OPS, only better than the Oakland A’s. They don’t have much power or speed, as they’re last in MLB in both home runs and stolen bases.
Starter Rony Garcia has split time this season between the bullpen and starting rotation. In 14 games and six starts in 38 innings, he has a 4.97 ERA but an impressive 1.05 WHIP and 41 strikeouts.
He’s shown good control with only allowing nine walks, but has given up eight home runs – which comes to 1.9 long flies per nine innings.
The bright spot for the Tigers has been their bullpen, which has the 6th lowest ERA in MLB. Their team ERA is in the middle third, good for 20th at 4.07 with a 1.24 WHIP.
Arizona Diamondbacks Betting Preview
Merrill Kelly has had a solid 2022 campaign for the D-Backs. In 14 starts and 78 innings, he’s compiled a 3.46 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP with 66 strikeouts. He’s issued 29 walks but kept the ball in the yard by giving up only four home runs.
Arizona hasn’t been a great hitting club this year, with a 25th best OPS at .671 and a team batting average of .215. However, they’ve been bailed out at the plate with the long ball, hitting 83 long flies – tied with the Twins for 11th in MLB.
Arizona Diamondbacks vs Detroit Tigers Prediction
While Arizona won’t contend for a wildcard spot this year, they’re improved over last year. I don’t think Detroit has enough pop at the plate to compete, especially against Merrill Kelly.
The D-Backs should be able to score enough runs – and hit at least one home run – against Garcia. That’s why I like Arizona on the run line.
Prediction: Arizona Run Line (-1.5)
