Arizona Diamondbacks vs Milwaukee Brewers Analysis
The Arizona Diamondbacks host the Milwaukee Brewers in the first of a four game series. Arizona has won at least two of three from the Phillies at home, while the Brew Crew took two of three games from the Pirates at American Family Field.
It’ll be a really good pitching matchup, as Brandon Woodruff will go against Merrill Kelly. First pitch is scheduled for 9:40 PM EDT at Chase Field.
Milwaukee is in the playoff hunt with a 69-60 record and 2.5 games behind San Diego for the last wild card spot.
Arizona probably won’t make the playoffs this year, but is trending in the right direction with a 61-67 record. The D-Backs plan was to wait for their young talent to develop and have the team they wanted, and it’s turned out pretty well.
D’Backs Call Up Young Outfielders
Jake McCarthy, Alec Thomas and Corbin Carroll are good outfielders and hitters who should be key parts of Arizona’s lineup for years to come. They still need help in the bullpen, but if they can shore up their relief pitching, this team should be a playoff contender in 2023.
As Colonel Hannibal Smith used to say on the A-Team – and what the D-Backs front office is probably saying – “I love it when a plan comes together.”
Make or Brake Time For Brewers
While some pitchers and players love being in the spotlight, others do their job without it. And one of those pitchers who’s done well without a lot of media attention is Brandon Woodruff, who’s had a solid year with the Brewers.
In 20 starts and 108.2 innings, the right-hander has a 3.31 ERA with a 1.13 WHIP and 132 strikeouts. Woodruff had a rough start to the season, giving up four or more earned runs in three of his first six starts.
Since his last blow-up start on May 9 in Cincinnati, he’s had 14 outings in a row where he gave up just three earned runs or less. He’s not an ‘innings eater’ averaging just over 5.0 innings per start, but the Brewers should be able to count on him down the stretch to keep them in just about every game.
The Brewers have had good hitting and pitching to get them where they are today. Milwaukee is 9th in both team OPS and staff ERA, and 3rd in home runs.
Although they can dial up the long ball, they aren’t the most consistent hitting team as they’re 21st in team batting average. Whether they can get enough consistent and/or timely hits will probably determine if they make the postseason.
Arizona Diamondbacks vs Milwaukee Brewers Prediction
Hot hitting is what’s improved the Diamondbacks’ record the last couple of weeks. They’ve gone 9-6 in their last 15 games, and scored a combined 55 runs in seven games leading up to Wednesday night.
Merrill Kelly has done a great job in the Arizona starting rotation this year, but hasn’t gotten as much press because he’s on the same team as Zac Gallen. But the right-hander is a big reason for the team’s success this season. In 26 starts and 157.2 innings he has an ERA of 2.97, plus a 1.13 WHIP with 135 strikeouts.
The Diamondbacks are a young and dangerous team with a slim chance to make the postseason. However, they could play spoiler to a playoff contender like the Brewers.
Both starting pitchers are evenly matched, and the Brewers have the better bullpen. Woodruff is also an experienced pitcher who should be able to navigate Arizona’s lineup.
This should be a good game, but I don’t see a lot of value on either side or total. Although they were blown out by the Phillies last night, the home team is playing a better, looser brand of baseball with less pressure. That’s why I’ll lean to Arizona on the moneyline.
Prediction: Arizona Diamondbacks Moneyline +118
