Arizona Diamondbacks vs Philadelphia Phillies Analysis
The Arizona Diamondbacks host the Philadelphia Phillies in the last of a three game series. The desert hasn’t been good to the visitors, as they’ve lost the first two games and allowed 25 runs.
It’s a battle of southpaws as Bailey Falter gets the start against Tommy Henry, first pitch at Chase Field is set for 9:40 PM EDT.
Phillies Pitching Getting Torched
The best thing you can say about this series for Philadelphia comes from 80’s pop star Howard Jones: Things can only get better. At least they hope so, after losing the first two games by a combined score of 25 to 10.
Bailey Falter is a relief pitcher turned starter for the Phillies, and has shown solid improvement this season. His 2022 numbers aren’t fantastic with a 4.41 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP, but is in good current form.
The Phils southpaw has turned in quality starts in his last three outings, 6.0 innings and allowing three earned runs or less. However, he did give up two bombs in his last start versus the Pirates, and has allowed six home runs in his last seven starts.
Arizona Hot As Can Be
The Diamondbacks have played much better than their 51-win campaign last year, with a 61-67 record. They’ve struggled with inconsistent hitting and one of the worst bullpens in MLB, but manager Torey Lovullo has done an excellent job with this team.
On Tuesday, Arizona wisely exercised their club option to retain Lovullo for 2023. The race for NL Manager of the Year award is probably between Buck Showalter and Arizona’s skipper.
In his short career in Arizona, Tommy Henry has pitched fairly well. Like most rookies, he’s had a challenge with his control and walks – 12 free passes in 27 innings – but the rest of his numbers have been good.
The southpaw has posted a 3.25 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP in five starts, and allowed just three home runs. But tonight he’ll face a Phillies lineup that hits left-handed pitching well, with a 3rd best team OPS.
The Snakes are as hot at the plate as the Arizona desert in August, as they’ve plated a whopping 55 runs in their last seven games. Those are video game-like numbers, and to paraphrase another 80s icon, Mr. T: I pity the pitchers that go against this team. We’ll see if Bailey Falter and the Phillies relievers can limit the damage from Diamondbacks hitters.
Arizona Diamondbacks vs Philadelphia Phillies Prediction
Both pitchers are young and unproven, Arizona is scorching hot at the plate and the Phillies are among the best hitting teams in baseball, and oh yeah, both bullpens aren’t very good.
As they say on Wall Street, the trend is your friend and these trends point towards a lot of runs. That’s why I’ll take the full game over 9.5 total runs scored.
Prediction: Over 9 Total Runs Scored
