Arizona Diamondbacks vs San Diego Padres Analysis

The San Diego Padres travel to Chase Field to play the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first of a quick two game series. The Friars lost three of four to a hot Phillies squad at home, while the D-Backs lost two of three to the Tigers at home last weekend.

Southpaw Sean Manaea takes the mound against right hander Zac Gallen. San Diego is a -110 road favorite, Arizona is a +100 home underdog and the run total is 7.5.

San Diego Padres Betting Preview

In 2022, San Diego has been a “road warrior” team with a 24-14 record. The hitting away from Petco Park is a big reason for the team’s success, as they average 5.5 runs per game and have a .257 team batting average.

I’ll bet that Padres’ hitters are looking forward to playing in the Arizona desert in June, where the ball should carry pretty well – even if the roof is closed.

Starter Sean Manaea was a solid pickup from the A’s just before the season started. In 13 starts and 79.0 innings, the southpaw has put up a 3.87 ERA, a 1.15 WHIP with 82 strikeouts. He’s been a durable “innings eater” going at least 6.0 innings in all but one of his starts.

His last start was on June 21st against this same Arizona team, where he went 6.0 innings and gave up four hits, two earned runs, walked three and struck out six.

San Diego’s success has been due to their pitching, with an 8th best ERA in baseball, and their bullpen has the 9th best ERA. They have a 19th best OPS at .697 with a .242 team batting average.

Arizona Diamondbacks Betting Preview

While Arizona has a much improved record from last year, it’s kind of amazing how they’ve done it. Their team OPS is 27th best and pitching staff ERA is 23rd in MLB.

What’s kept them afloat this year and playing better than expected? The long ball, as they’re tied for the Dodgers with 10th most home runs at 86.

Zac Gallen is probably Arizona’s best starting pitcher. Through 13 starts he has a 4-2 record, a 2.79 ERA, an outstanding 1.00 WHIP with 71 strikeouts in 71.0 innings, and with these kind of numbers has a good chance of pitching in the All-Star Game.

Arizona doesn’t hit southpaws well with a 4th worst OPS against lefties, and the Snakes’ bullpen hasn’t been great – even with the addition of Mark Melancon and Ian Kennedy. They have the 7th worst bullpen ERA in MLB.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs San Diego Padres Prediction

It’s a good starting pitching matchup, and neither team is expected to score a lot of runs. The Padres just swept this same Arizona team in a three game series a week ago at Petco Park, and they should be able to expose the D-Backs’ bullpen again later in this game. That’s why I like San Diego on the moneyline.

Prediction: San Diego Padres Moneyline
