Arizona Diamondbacks vs San Francisco Giants Analysis

The San Francisco Giants take on the Arizona Diamondbacks in the desert in the second of a three game series. The Snakes bit the visitors Monday night by a score of 8-3.

Laying the Wood

On paper, Alex Wood’s season stats aren’t that impressive with a 5.03 ERA, a 1.36 WHIP and 71 strikeouts in 73.1 innings. However, in 11 of his 15 starts he’s held the opposing team to three earned runs or less, and I think Gabe Kapler is pretty happy with these results. The ERA is bloated from two starts in May and June, most recently his June 23 outing at Atlanta where he gave up six earned runs in just 1.0 inning.

The Giants are just above average when it comes to hitting left-handed pitching, at 14th best in MLB with an OPS of .714 and team batting average of .232. They also have the 14th best overall OPS in baseball, and are 12th best with home runs at 92.

San Francisco has played okay this year, but maybe not as well as expected with a 40-38 record. Injuries have been a big reason for this, as Lamonte Wade Jr. has missed a lot of time on the IL. But he’s now back in the lineup and should make a big difference going forward for the Giants.

Struggles in the Minors

Tyler Gilbert has made the trip from Arizona’s AAA club in Reno to Phoenix (and vice versa) quite a bit this season. His 2022 major and minor league stats aren’t very good, as his season ERA for both clubs is over 7.00. However, his career minor league numbers are pretty solid. In 447 innings of work he’s accrued a 3.78 ERA, a 1.24 WHIP with 393 strikeouts. He’s a left-handed pitcher who has performed well in the past, but whose recent form isn’t very good.

Arizona hasn’t been very consistent at the plate, as they own the 5th worst OPS in MLB. They’ve produced just about all their runs by dialing long distance, as they’re 11th in home runs with 94.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs San Francisco Giants Prediction

It looks like the Giants took off yesterday as a holiday, but they should be focused and ready to play after Monday’s 8-3 loss. While Alex Wood hasn’t had great stats this year, he’s still a much better pitcher than Tyler Gilbert. And Arizona hasn’t hit left-handed pitching this well, with a 26th best OPS of .665 and a .227 batting average. Lamonte Wade Jr. is also back in the lineup, which should give the visitors a boost. That’s why I’ll take the Giants on the moneyline.
