Astros vs Mariners Analysis
The Seattle Mariners visit Minute Maid Park to take on the Houston Astros Monday night in the first of a three-game series. Marco Gonzales takes the hill against Jake Odorizzi.
Seattle Mariners Team Preview
Seattle comes into Monday’s play with good momentum, taking two of three last weekend from the Rays in Tampa. The offense came to life in Tropicana Park as the M’s scored 14 runs in their last three games.
Team OPS is now 5th-best in the majors at .765 with a team batting average of .240, and they’re 2nd-best in walks taken with 91 free passes. This means their hitters are seeing the ball well three weeks into the season.
Starter Marco Gonzales comes off a short start versus Tampa Bay, as he got hit by a line drive in the forearm and had to leave the game.
The southpaw has decent numbers so far with a 3.86 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 14.0 innings, but also includes four home runs, a .279 opponent batting average and 1.50 WHIP.
Houston Astros Team Preview
The Astros dropped two of three in Toronto to the Blue Jays last weekend, with a pair of one-run losses Saturday and Sunday. It continued the team’s pattern of scoring a lot of runs in one game, then struggling to put up runs the next two.
Houston has a talented lineup and played in the World Series last season, so they should be able to figure it out at the plate and become more consistent.
Combined with a shorter spring training than usual and more games played than any other team except Atlanta, the World Series “hangover” could be a reason for their inconsistent hitting.
Keep an eye on this lineup over the next couple of weeks. They should be able to produce more runs and be more consistent at the plate. However, if they’re still struggling to hit in mid to late May, we may want to consider fading the Astros more than usual.
Tonight’s starter, southpaw Jake Odorizzi came off a really good outing against the Rangers. He threw 6.0 innings and gave up just one earned run with four strikeouts.
However, his season-long numbers should give bettors some cause for pause. The veteran has a 6.00 ERA, 1.67 WHIP, opponents batting average of .282 and has only struck out nine hitters in 15 innings of work.
Astros vs Mariners Prediction
Houston’s offense has continued to struggle in early May and it’s a talented lineup with guys like Alex Bregman, Kyle Tucker and masher Yordan Alvarez.
Jose Altuve is scheduled to return to the lineup tonight, which could give the ‘Stros a lift. This will be the second time that both teams face the opposing starters this season, Seattle is hitting the ball really well and Houston is due for a higher-scoring game.
The total of 9 seems a bit low, and I think there should be enough offense for this total to go over.
Prediction: Over 9 Total Runs Scored
