Athletics vs Orioles Analysis

The Baltimore Orioles visit the Oakland A’s for the last of a four-game set at RingCentral Coliseum. It’s a battle of right-handers, with Tyler Wells going against Paul Blackburn. The O’s will try and even the series after Oakland took two out of three.

Orioles Look to Even Series Before Heading Out

The Orioles have relied on good pitching to keep them competitive in most games, as the offense has really struggled. O’s pitchers have only given up three earned runs in the first three games of this series – two errors led to four unearned runs in Monday night’s game.

The only bright spot in the lineup is #2 hitter Anthony Santander, who has a .297 average and .901 OPS, and leadoff hitter Chris Mullins has the next highest OPS at .652. Until the hitting comes around, Baltimore will have to lean on its pitching staff and starter Tyler Wells.

The second-year right-hander worked out of the Orioles bullpen in 2021, because he needed to stick to a strict innings limit after recovering from Tommy John surgery in May 2019. Wells will have a season-long limit of about 100 total innings, and a cap of 65-75 pitches per outing.

After his last start against the Yankees where he threw four scoreless innings, manager Brandon Hyde told reporters: “We have high hopes and think he has a huge future, whether it’s in the rotation or the bullpen. We want to give him a look as a starter and see how it goes, because we think he’s going to be an impact big league pitcher in some role for the rest of his career.”

Athletics Need a Better Home Field

That’s pretty high praise for a young pitcher this early in his career. But Wells has a solid repertoire of pitches that include a high-90s fastball, effective changeup and two distinctly different breaking pitches. The Athletics have played better than most baseball analysts thought they would to begin the year.

One of the big reasons for their performance is starter Paul Blackburn, who’s made two very good outings to start 2022 going 10.0 innings, giving up just two earned runs with 10 strikeouts, eight hits and just one walk. The A’s offense got off to a good start on the road, but has sputtered playing at home.

Athletics vs Orioles Prediction

Wells and Blackburn have pitched well to start the season, both teams have struggled to score runs and RingCentral Coliseum is more of a pitcher than hitter-friendly park.

While both teams are due for positive regression on offense, I have my doubts if they can put up more than seven runs. That’s why I’ll go with the under 7 run total.

Prediction: Under 7 Total Runs
