Athletics vs Rangers Analysis
The Texas Rangers visit RingCentral Coliseum to play the Oakland Athletics in the first of a three-game set. Glenn Otto takes the hill against Adam Oller.
The Rangers hope to start a winning streak after they snapped their five-game skid with an 8-6 victory over Seattle last night.
Rangers Have to Lean on Hitting
Texas called up pitcher Glenn Otto from Triple-A Round Rock as Jon Gray went to the 10-day IL with a left knee sprain. Otto made six starts in 2021, went 0-3 with a 9.26 ERA and 1.71 WHIP in 23.1 innings.
The only statistical bright spot from the hard-throwing right-hander was 28 strikeouts, which comes to more than one per inning.
The offense got back on track Thursday night putting up eight runs against Marco Gonzales and the Mariners bullpen. Eli White, Nathaniel Lowe and Adolis Garcia powered the Texas attack.
Oller Must Improve for Oakland
For the Athletics, rookie right-hander Adam Oller gets the start. Oller has had two really bad games to start the 2022 season, going just 4.2 innings at Tampa Bay and at Toronto.
He gave up 10 hits, seven earned runs, six walks and six strikeouts, which equals a 13.50 ERA, a 3.43 WHIP and an opponent’s .435 batting average. Yikes.
Granted, it’s a small sample size and early in the season, but unless he shows drastic improvement in his next outing or two, the right-hander may not be long for the big leagues.
The top of the A’s order did most of the damage in Thursday’s 6-4 against the Orioles. #1 through #3 hitters Tony Kemp, Sheldon Neuse and Sean Murphy went a combined 8-for-12 at the dish, with 5 RBI and four runs scored.
The Athletics have found ways to produce offense, even missing some key players from last year. They’re third in the league with 66 runs scored, although they rank just 17th in team batting average and OPS.
Athletics vs Rangers Prediction
Both starting pitchers are young and inexperienced, with really bad numbers at the major league level. The Rangers offense broke out of their mini-slump at the plate last night with eight runs and a win against the Mariners, and snapped a five-game losing streak.
That positive momentum should carry into Friday’s matchup, With two bad starters and a bad Texas bullpen, I don’t understand why the run line is set at 7.5.
The books are sharp and know their business (and this could be a trap), but that number seems too low – even in a pitcher’s park like RingCentral Coliseum. I’ll take the full game over.
Prediction: Over 8 Total Runs Scored
