Atlanta Braves vs Washington Nationals Analysis

The Braves have been a little shaky in the first week of their title defense, starting the season just 3-3. The Braves split a four-game series with Cincinnati and are looking to win this series vs Washington.

Atlanta’s offense was on a mission last night as they scored 16 runs and put up at least one run in six of eight innings. Atlanta had 19 hits and it was truly an offensive masterclass from the Braves.

This afternoon, Atlanta has ace lefty Max Fried taking the bump. Fried had a rough Opening Day outing against the Reds. Fried took the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits over just 5.2 innings pitched.

I expect Fried to come back to form this game against a struggling Nationals team that has a .222 batting average for the season so far.

How Deep Can Gray Go?

After putting the hammer on the Braves in the first game of the series, the momentum completely shifted last night when Patrick Corbin and the rest of Washington’s staff got shelled for 16 runs.

Washington is just 2-4 on the season, and there is not much excitement surrounding this team outside of All-World star Juan Soto.

One other enticing piece the Nationals have is rookie pitcher Josiah Gray who will be on the mound this afternoon. Gray started off well in his first start of this season against the Mets, but he quickly fell off in that game. Gray allowed four runs on eight hits over just four innings.

Now, Gray is tasked with settling down this Brave’s lineup that put up a 16-spot last night. I am interested to see how Gray handles this challenge.

Atlanta Braves vs Washington Nationals Prediction

The Braves have the much better team, with a proven starter, and all the momentum in the series right now. I do think the Braves win, but I am taken back by laying -205 on the moneyline.

I think Josiah Gray will be a great pitcher in the majors someday but he still has his ways to go. As we saw last night also, the Braves can mash while the Nationals relievers are not too strong. I like the Braves team total of over 4.5 runs (-134) for this matchup.
