Baltimore Orioles vs Seattle Mariners Analysis
The Baltimore Orioles host the Seattle Mariners for the rubber match of a three game series from Oriole Park at Camden Yards on Thursday night.
The Mariners dismantled the Orioles in Game 1 with a 10-0 victory, while the Orioles returned the favor last night with a lopsided 9-2 drubbing. Both teams are actually eight games below .500 entering this contest, which is more than was expected from Baltimore but way below expectations for Seattle.
Two right-handed veterans get starting pitching duties, as Chris Flexen gets the nod for Seattle while Jordan Lyles toes the rubber for Baltimore. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM EST/4:05 PST.
Flexen on the O’s
The Seattle Mariners will be looking bounce back from a 9-2 loss yesterday to take home the series victory with a win tonight. Last year’s Cy Young award winner Robbie Ray hasn’t pitched anything close to last season.
He gave up four earned runs on six hits in only five innings while taking the loss and dropping his record to 4-6 on the season. Next man up was even worse, as Sergio Romo yielded five runs while only pitching two-thirds of the 6th inning.
Ty France went 3 for 4, upping his batting average to .355. Seattle bolstered their offense in the off-season but injuries and underperformance have them at 20th in runs scored. They do play at a pitcher friendly home park, which doesn’t make it easy to score runs.
Chris Flexen takes the mound for the Seattle Mariners as they look for the series triumph. Flexen is 2-6 on the season with a 4.47 ERA and 1.41 WHIP. He did have his best start of the season last time out against the Houston Astros.
Flexen hurled seven innings while allowing only a run on seven hits while striking out six and earning his second victory of the season.
Baltimore Fights the Good Fight
The Baltimore Orioles haven’t been anything to write home about but they continue to fight hard play the role of spoiler.
They find themselves in a position to take two of three from the Seattle Mariners after winning three of five against the Boston Red Sox. After getting rocked 10-0 in the first game of this series, the O’s bounced back by crushing Seattle 9-2.
The O’s offensive attack was the story of the game as four players hit homeruns, including Trey Mancini, Ryan Mountcastle, Ramon Urias and Rougned Odor.
Mancini went 2 for 4 with a homerun, double and two RBI. Rookie starter Kyle Bradish wasn’t overwhelming but he kept his team in the game, pitching 4.2 innings while allowing two runs.
Three bullpen arms combined for 5.1 innings of shutout baseball to secure the blowout. Despite the recent success, the O’s offense is still ranks poorly at 24th in runs scored and 26th in OPS & wRC+. Journeyman Jordan Lyles gets the start for Baltimore in the series deciding game.
As usual Lyles is a back of the rotation innings eater, with a 3-4 record 4.26 ERA and 1.42. He gave up three runs in 4.1 innings in his last time out against the Boston Red Sox.
Baltimore Orioles vs Seattle Mariners Prediction
The money line is set at -120 for the Seattle Mariners and +100 for the Baltimore Orioles with a total of 9. Chris Flexen was dominant in his last start against the Houston Astros and his matchup with the Orioles is obviously more favorable.
Jordan Lyles is a contact pitcher which might not bode well against a Seattle offense that is more dangerous than some numbers may suggest.
We mentioned how they play at a pitchers paradise at T-Mobile Park and they rank 20th in runs scored. However, they rank 5th in wRC+ which suggests that their offense is more potent than they have shown. Regardless their offense is superior to that of the Orioles even in a worse hitting environment.
They moved the fences back at Camden Yards making it less ideal for hitters but it’s still more friendly
than T-Mobile Park. The Orioles do have a slight bullpen but I fully expect Flexen to pitch deeper into the game than Lyles.
This line seems short on Seattle, it seems like they should be bigger favorites. They are on the road, but I will gladly take the Seattle money line in the rubber match.
Prediction: Seattle Mariners Moneyline -109
