Best Opening Day Strikeout Prop Bets
Zach Eflin (TB) Under 5.5 Strikeouts
Zach Eflin is a very capable strikeout pitcher, and we are fading him for one singular reason: the Rays are one of the most analytically savvy organizations, and they are known for keeping their starters’ pitch counts down on Opening Day. Not to mention, the Blue Jays lineup is littered with high-contact, disciplined hitters with low strikeout rates, so this is a tough matchup to accrue strikeouts in, regardless. With our expectation that Eflin goes just 65 pitches, it is very hard to rack up six strikeouts that take at least 18 pitches over what should be considered more of a tune-up than a true start.
Logan Webb (SF) Over 4.5 Strikeouts
Even without Juan Soto, who has one of the best eyes in baseball, in the Padres’ lineup, this is still a tough lineup to strike out. Betting the over on Webb’s Ks is the opposite of betting on the under for Eflin’s, and we anticipate Webb going deep into this ball game and making this start like it’s the middle of the season. Webb led the MLB in innings pitched last season, and he has a workhorse mentality that should allow him to go deep into this one.
Webb had a 22.8 strikeout percentage last season, which isn’t great, but he is elite at getting chases. Webb finished in the 88th percentile in chase rate in 2023, and if he keeps up that profile, he can keep hitters unbalanced. His ability to go deep into a game and induce chases makes this one of the best strikeout props for Thursday,
Cole Raggans (KC) Over 6.5 Strikeouts
Cole Raggans is a popular pick to lead the MLB in Ks and be in the Cy Young conversation this season after bursting onto the scene at the end of last year. Raggans is a lefty with filthy stuff, and the Royals starting him on Opening Day speaks volumes about their confidence in him.
The Twins were the highest strikeout rate team in the MLB last season, and though they added a few players who should help them out, they are still a three-true outcome team. Raggans finished in the 85th percentile in K rate and the 83rd in whiff rate. It is possible the Royals hold him back and make this a short start, but if they don’t, this is a tailor-made matchup for Ragans to show his stuff.
