Boston Red Sox at Oakland Athletics NRFI (-120)
The Boston Red Sox squeaked home a first-inning run in Oakland last night, but we do not expect them to do so again tonight. Boston averages .2 runs per first inning so far this season, and tonight, they face a tougher pitcher to score runs on.
On the other hand, the Athletics average .4 runs per first inning so far this season, but they, too, now face a tougher pitcher to score against. Last season, Oakland was 25th in first-inning runs scored per game, and this lineup is not any better than it was last season.
Brayan Bello, Boston’s starter, is the No. 1 in the Red Sox rotation, and he should be a tougher matchup to tag for a run. Alex Wood, the Atheltic’s lefty starter, is at his best the first time through the batting order. Bello and Wood are both 1-0 to the NRFI this season, and we expect that to continue tonight.
Cleveland Guardians at Seattle Mariners NRFI (-135)
We backed these two teams to go under .5 runs in the first inning last night, and we were treated with cash. We are going back to the well with these teams going under .5 runs tonight as both teams bring a higher caliber of starting pitcher to the bump tonight.
We noted yesterday how both of these teams are offensively challenged, and these teams did nothing to dispel that early in the game yesterday. These teams ended up scoring nine combined runs, but none of them came in the first inning.
Luis Castillo is Seattle’s ace, and he should be able to shut down the Guardian’s lackluster top of the lineup. On the other side, Shane Bieber looked great to start the season, and he should be able to keep the Mariners bats at bay for three outs.
Cleveland averages .6 first-inning runs per game this season, but their production came against the A’s, arguably the worst team in baseball. Seattle averages .2 first-inning runs per game, and now they need to take on a former Cy Young winner.
The combination of great pitching, a pitcher’s park, and weak top-of-the-lineups is tough to overcome, making this one of the best NFRI bets to make today.
