San Francisco Giants at San Diego Padres NRFI (-115)
One of the first NRFI bets we are making for Opening Day is the Giants and the Padres going under a run in the first inning. San Diego already had their first two games of the season, and they are 1-1 scoring runs in the first inning. They did not score a run off of Tyler Glassnow, but they scored five off rookie pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
In Yu Darvish’s first start of the season against the Dodgers, he did not allow a first-inning run, so he is 1-0 on the season in NRFIs. We like how Darvish has already seen game action, as it’s less likely he is rusty since he has already pitched this season. San Diego was 5th in first-inning runs allowed last year, but Darvish already getting out the jitters is a plus for this bet.
Logan Webb will start for the Giants in San Diego. Last season, Webb allowed 15 first-inning runs in 33 games, which is not great. However, a stat like first-inning runs allowed is not a sticky stat, and we expect some positive regression for Webb this season. He’s one of the better pitchers in the National League, and he is still young and improving.
At -125, the Padres x Giants is one of the best NRFI bets on the board.
Pittsburgh Pirates at Miami Marlins NRFI (-135)
Our second of two best NRFI bets of the day is juicy, but the juice is worth the squeeze in Miami. The Pirates were 28th in the MLB in first-inning runs scored last season, and Miami was 24th, averaging .43 and .44 runs in the first inning, respectively. Neither of these offenses did a good job of getting it going early.
Jesus Luzardo, Miami’s starter, was one of the better NRFI pitchers in the MLB last season. He allowed just 10 first-inning runs in 32 first-innings pitched, giving him a 2.25 ERA and a .88 WHIP. Luzardo had a tough Spring Training, but based on his performances last season, we expect him to bounce back and look more like the pitcher he was last season.
Mitch Keller was not a great NRFI pitcher last season, but he’s the Pirates ace, and the Marlins’ lineup is not one of the scarier top of the orders in baseball. Keller allowed 17 first-inning runs in 32 first innings, sporting a 4.78 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP. We expect positive regression from Keller, a young pitcher, so we like this as one of the best NFRI bets to make today.
