Blue Jays vs Rangers Analysis
The Texas Rangers kick off their 2022 season against the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre in Toronto. The Jays finished last season 91-71 but that was only good enough for fourth place in the highly competitive American League East. The Rangers came in last place in the AL West, but hope to improve after a busy off-season. Toronto went 4-2 in six head-to-head meetings with Texas last season.
New-Look Rangers Have High Hopes
It’s the Texas Rangers’ 50th anniversary season and they have spent money in an attempt to contend. This off-season they brought in Marcus Semien, Corey Seager, Jon Gray and Kole Calhoun.
Semien is a former Blue Jay who finished third in the MVP voting last season, while Seager is a former Rookie of the Year. Semien wastes no time squaring off against his former team in Toronto.
Jon Gray will take the hill for Texas after pitching seven seasons with the Colorado Rockies. Last season he actually pitched better at Coors Field than on the road, so it will be interesting to see how he performs on Friday in Toronto.
Blue Jays Have Huge Expectations
The Toronto Blue Jays hope that more stability brings even more consistent results. They won 91 games despite calling three different cities home. The season started at Dunedin in Florida, then shifted to Buffalo, New York and were finally able to return to Rogers Centre in Toronto.
The Jays did lose some key players including Semien, AL Cy Young winner Robbie Ray and Randal Grichuk. However they did acquire third baseman Matt Chapman who hit 27 home runs with 72 RBI last season.
Jose Berrios will be the Blue Jays Opening Day starter in his first full season with the team. Last year he posted a 7-5 record with a 3.48 ERA in Minnesota before heading to Toronto and going 5-4 with a 3.58 ERA. Berrios is in a great spot starting his season as the ace in Toronto.
Blue Jays vs Rangers Prediction
Neither side has much of a track record against the others starting pitcher. Both teams now have potent offenses that can score runs in bunches. The starters are solid but a shortened spring training will also lead to pitch counts that could end their outings sooner than expected. Both bullpens could get exposed to push this one over nine runs.
Betting Recommendation: Over 9 Runs
