Boston Red Sox vs Baltimore Orioles Analysis
The Baltimore Orioles travel to Fenway Park to begin a four game series against the Boston Red Sox on Monday evening. The Red Sox were just dismantled by the New York Yankees in four game sweep by the combined score of 19-13.
The Orioles ended with a four game split against the Houston Astros after jumping out in front 2-0. The 31 year old journeyman Jordan Lyles gets the nod for Baltimore while Boston counters with the rookie righty Connor Seabold. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST/4:10 PST.
O’s Need To Win Out
The Baltimore Orioles record fell to 79-73 after losing 6-3 to the Houston Astros in extra frames. Austin Voth pitched well out of the gate with five innings of one run baseball. Ryan Mountcastle had the teams only extra-base hit, going 2-4 with a double.
Starter turned reliever Keegan Akin took the loss as he was shelled for three earned runs in the 11th inning. The Orioles currently sit four games behind the Seattle Mariners in the American League Wild Card race.
With only ten games to play, they will need every win from here on out to get in striking distance. The Baltimore offense ranks below average on the season as they rank 20th in both runs scored and OPS. The season has been a mixed bag for Baltimore starter Jordan Lyles.
Lyles is 11-11 on the season with a 4.50 ERA and 1.39 WHIP. He pitched a complete game last time out, holding the Detroit Tigers to one run on three hits and no walks. However Lyles has struggled in his four outings against Boston, allowing 16 runs across 18 innings of work.
Red Sox Look To Play Spoiler
It’s been a disappointing campaign for the Boston Red Sox as they currently occupy last place in the American League East with a 72-80 record. Their only consolation is to play the role of spoiler against Baltimore to begin the week.
It’s actually a role reversal between the two teams from many seasons prior where Baltimore would be the spoiler. The Red Sox are coming off an embarrassment of a series where they were swept in four games against the division leading Yankees.
They lost 2-0 on Sunday in a six inning game shortened by weather. Rookie Brayan Bello took the loss to go 2-7 after allowing two runs across the full six innings. Rob Refsnyder had the teams only hit with a single.
Another rookie gets the start on Monday with Connor Seabold on the mound. Seabold is 0-3 on the season with a 10.47 ERA and 2.20 WHIP. He gave up four runs across five innings last time out in Cincinnati against the Reds.
Boston Red Sox vs Baltimore Orioles Prediction
The Boston Red Sox are slight home favorites with a money line set at -130 while the Baltimore Orioles sit at +110 with a total of 9.5. Both starting pitchers have had brutal seasons and seem ripe for the picking.
Lyles has struggled with the Sox with an 8.00 ERA across 18 innings. He has also struggled on the road with a 5.48 ERA and 1.43 WHIP across 16 road starts. Seabold has only on Fenway start and he gave up seven runs in 2.2 innings.
He is backed by a horrendous bullpen ranking bottom five on the season and of late. The one thing the Sox can still do is mash at the plate as they still hover around top ten in most categories.
On top of that it looks like the wind is blowing at Fenway Park at game time. I can’t see making a decision on a side here, the over seems like the best angle here.
Prediction: Over 9.5 -110
