Boston Red Sox vs Baltimore Orioles Analysis
It’s getaway day from Fenway Park as the Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox meet for the fourth and final game of this series. The Orioles won the first game but after losing two in a row the best they can do is salvage a split.
The Boston Red Sox have been in off-season mode for months now but can continue to play spoiler against Baltimore. This game will determine the season series as they are currently deadlocked at 9-9.
Rookie righty Mike Baumann toes the rubber for the O’s while the flamethrower Nathan Eovaldi gets the nod for the Sox.
Red Sox Role Reversal With Orioles
The Boston Red Sox improved to 74-81 on the season after beating the Baltimore Orioles 3-1 on Wednesday night. The elder statesman Rich Hill tossed six scoreless innings while scattering five hits & one walk and striking out nine.
Alex Verdugo went 2 for 4 while hitting his 11th home run of the season. The Sox have fallen well short of expectations this season due to poor pitching and a multitude of injuries. Boston has decided to pitch the righty Nathan Eovaldi after being on the shelf since mid-August with shoulder inflammation.
The 32 year-old will potentially take the ball for the last time at Fenway Park as member of the Red Sox. Eovaldi is a soon to be free agent after making only 18 starts this season due to several different injuries. He is 5-3 on the year with a 4.15 ERA and 1.26 WHIP.
O’s Watch Playoff Hopes Slip Away
Time is slipping away for the Baltimore Orioles as they are 4.5 games behind in the Wild Card race with only 7 games remaining. The Orioles record dropped to 80-75 on the season after losing 3-1 on Wednesday.
Catcher Robinson Chirinos drove in their only run of the night on his 4th long ball of the season. Dean Kremer was roughed up for three runs on six hits and four walks across five innings of work.
Mike Baumann draws the start for Baltimore on Thursday afternoon. He has been working middle relief in the O’s pen for the majority of the season. Baumann is 1-3 with a 4.32 ERA and 1.44 WHIP on the season, he tossed four innings of two run baseball last time out against the Houston Astros.
Boston Red Sox vs Baltimore Orioles Prediction
The Boston Red Sox enter this contest as -155 money line favorites with the Baltimore Orioles sit at +135 with a total of 9. At this point the Orioles are essentially playing play-off games the rest of the way.
The Red Sox have enjoyed the role of spoiler and won the past two games. It’s basically a bullpen game for both sides as Nathan Eovaldi will be on pitch count and Mike Baumann has thrown four innings once this season.
The Boston bullpen has been dreadful as they now rank 25th with a 4.55 ERA. Both these lineups can pile up the runs, as they illustrated with 13-8 and 14-9 scores in the first two games. I can’t imagine trying to pick a side in this one based on the starting pitching matchups. Give me the over please.
Prediction: Over 9 +100
