Boston Red Sox vs Baltimore Orioles Analysis

Both teams come to Fenway Park in search of a 3-2 series victory when the Baltimore Orioles face the Boston Red Sox on Memorial Day Monday. The Orioles came back to win Game 1 on Friday night, then they split doubleheader on Saturday and followed that up with Boston dismantling the O’s 12-2 yesterday. The Red Sox offense went back to video game mode and crushed five home runs in the process.

Boston Must Win This Kind Of Series

The Boston Red Sox bats have been on another level as it seems like the heart of the order all caught fire at the same time. In yesterday’s 12-2 drubbing of Baltimore, the bottom half of the order helped provide the fireworks. Red Sox Nation not only got home runs from Kike Hernandez and Rafael Devers, but also Franchy Cordero, Brian Dalbec and Christian Arroyo.

Starter Nick Pivetta continued his dominant run with his fifth-straight quality start. He tossed six innings of one-run baseball while allowing five hits.

The Red Sox offense now averages 4.72 runs a game, while ranking third in batting average, third in slugging percentage and tenth in on-base percentage.

Forty two year-old Rich Hill toes the rubber for Boston as the league’s oldest active player. He tossed five innings of three-run (two earned) baseball while allowing only two hits in his last start.

The Red Sox absolutely need to take advantage of this soft spot in their schedule to gain ground on the Wild Card spots. They could ride the momentum of a victory here into their next five home games against the vulnerable Cincinnati Reds and Oakland Athletics.

O’s Can Steal Series

After winning two of the first three games of this rare five-game set, the Baltimore Orioles were tagged for five long-balls in a crushing 12-2 loss. Bruce Zimmerman was Boston’s latest victim, allowing six earned runs on eight hits including all five home runs in only four innings pitched. Trey Mancini went 3-for-3 with a double and RBI.

Despite yesterday’s loss, Baltimore still has an opportunity to win the series after winning on Friday and splitting on Saturday. Baltimore definitely has the numbers of a last-place team, as they rank 25th in batting average and on-base percentage while scoring only 3.71 runs per game. The Baltimore pitching staff isn’t much better as they rank 15th in ERA but 26th in opponent batting average.

The O’s turn to young righty Tyler Wells, who has a 1-4 record, 4.30 ERA and 1.17 WHIP. In his last start against the New York Yankees he allowed two earned run in five innings of work. He faced the Red Sox in a hand full of relief appearances and the results weren’t very favorable.

Boston Red Sox vs Baltimore Orioles Prediction

This Red Sox lineup is on another planet right now and considering they are at home against a right-handed pitcher that should continue. They have already had success against Wells as Kike Hernandez, Xander Bogaerts and J.D. Martinez each have a blast in only two or three plate appearances each.

We basically know Hill is going to throw 4 to 6 innings and allow a few runs. It just feels like to Sox bullpen might get exposed late in the game, so I prefer to stick with their hot bats. Let’s look for Boston to provide the fireworks early and often while clearing their first five inning team total of 2.5.

Prediction: Boston Red Sox F5 (first five innings) Team Total OVER 2.5 (-130 at DraftKings)
