Boston Red Sox vs Baltimore Orioles Analysis
The Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox meet for a quick one game makeup game from Fenway Park on Thursday evening.
The Red Sox were swept at home in a short two game series against the Atlanta Braves. Meanwhile the Baltimore Orioles won both games against the Toronto Blue Jays in what became a two game series due to a rain delay.
These teams are heading in opposite directions as the Sox continue to falter, while the O’s are now tied with the Tampa Bay Rays for the third and final Wild Card spot. The 26 year-old righty Dean Kremer gets the nod for Baltimore, while Boston turns to the rookie Josh Winckowski. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST/4:10 PST.
Orioles Continue To Surge
Only a rain out can stop this Baltimore Orioles run as they have won seven of their last eight games and 12 of 18 since the All-Star break. They beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-5 in their last game on Tuesday evening.
Rougned Odor went 2 for 4 with a solo-blast and Kyle Bradish tossed 5.1 innings of three run baseball. At 58-52 the Orioles are now tied with the Tampa Bay Rays for the third and final Wild Card spot. All this despite being sellers at the deadline and moving their closer Jorge Lopez and one of their top everyday players in Trey Mancini.
They have improved an offensive attack that ranks 19th in both runs scored and OPS. Baltimore will send the righty Dean Kremer to the hill. He is 4-3 on the season with a 3.43 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. However his underlying numbers are concerning as he has an xERA of 5.02.
Sox Checking Out
The Boston Red Sox are coming off a two game sweep at the hands of the Atlanta Braves including an 8-4 loss last night. Tommy Pham hit a three-run blast from the leadoff position, while Nick Pivetta threw six innings of three run baseball.
The Sox have now lost four straight games as well as 13 of 19 games since the All-Star break. They are now four games below .500 at 54-58, five games out of a Wild Card spot. What was a close top five lineup has now dipped all the way down to 12th in both OPS & runs scored.
Red Sox rookie hurler Josh Winckowski toes the rubber on Thursday night. He is 5-5 with a 4.86 ERA and 1.50 WHIP across 50 innings of work. Winckowski faced Baltimore in his debut and gave up four runs in three innings.
Boston Red Sox vs Baltimore Orioles Prediction
The Boston Red Sox are slightly favored with a money line set at -125, while the Baltimore Orioles sit at +105 with a total of 10. These teams are both heading in completely opposite directions.
The Orioles bats are on fire, scoring 13 runs in their last two games. Mullins, Mountcastle and Santander should feast on the rookie righty Winckowski.
The Sox still have a potent lineup that can put up their share of runs, especially against a vulnerable righty like Dean Kremer. You could ride the streaks and take Baltimore here, but I prefer the over here.
Prediction: Over 10 Total Runs Scored -105
