Boston Red Sox vs Cincinnati Reds Analysis

The Cincinnati Reds and Boston Red Sox square off in the second of two interleague games at Fenway Park on Wednesday evening. The Reds won 2-1 last night behind an incredible pitching performance from Luis Castillo. The Red Sox bats were silent for a second-straight game and only mustered up one run on a ninth inning chopper.

Boston Bats Suddenly Floundering

It was May as opposed to March, but the Boston Red Sox went “In like a lion, out like a lamb” regardless. They would have went back-to-back games without a run if it wasn’t for Alex Verdugo’s RBI chopper with one out in the bottom of the 9th. Still Boston lost 2-1 to the Cincinnati Reds last night after getting squashed 10-0 by the Baltimore Orioles on Monday night.

These two games were polar opposites of the prior 20 contests where the Red Sox averaged 6.95 runs a game. The Sox wasted a solid outing by Michael Wacha, who allowed only one unearned run on three hits in 5.2 innings of work. What’s even worse is that he received a loss for the effort.

We already mentioned the lack of offensive contributions as they only had four hits all night. Boston hopes the young gun Garrett Whitlock can right the ship for a Red Sox team that has dropped four of their last six games to bottomfeeders. Whitlock has a 3.49 ERA and 1.14 WHIP with 44 strikeouts across 38.2 innings on the season.

Reds Search For First Sweep

The Cincinnati Reds could sweep the Red Sox with a victory tonight. It is only a two-game sweep, but after their start to the season in April, I’m sure they will take it.

Strong pitching led to their 2-1 victory last night. Luis Castillo was nearly untouchable, hurling six innings of shutout baseball with 10 strikeouts and only one hit allowed. Three bullpen arms combined for three innings of one run baseball to seal the victory. The ageless veteran Joey Votto had two doubles to lead the team offensively. Knowone had an RBI as both run were scored due to throwing errors at first base.

The Reds will need more from their bats if they want to keep winning consistently. They currently rank 25th in team OPS at .664 while only scoring 4.23 runs per game. Cincinnati will look to their top-rated prospect Hunter Greene to stifle the Boston bats for a second-straight game. However Greene has a rough go of it, with a 2-6 record, 5.89 ERA and 1.51 WHIP. What’s even more concerning is being tagged for 15 home runs and giving up 24 free passes in only 44.1 innings.

Boston Red Sox vs Cincinnati Reds Prediction

The past two nights haven’t been what we have become accustomed to with these Sox bats as they were shut down by Castillo and Wells. However, facing Hunter Greene should provide the perfect get right spot.

His 15 home runs and 24 walks don’t bode very well for Fenway Park. He throws straight gas and Red Sox hitters will get their timing and make him pay. The only solid Reds’ reliever is Alexis Diaz and Boston may not have to deal with him after he threw 1.1 innings just last night. Even including Diaz’s strong numbers, the Reds bullpen ranks 28th with a 4.79 ERA. Let’s back the Sox bats to come back around and hit some longballs against Greene and company.

Prediction: Red Sox Team Total OVER 4.5 Runs (-135 at DraftKings)
