Boston Red Sox vs Detroit Tigers Analysis
The Detroit Tigers prepare for the second game of a three game series from Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday evening. The Red Sox took an early lead and never looked back as they prevailed in a 5-2 ball game last night.
The oldest active player in the majors Rich Hill takes the mound for Boston while the young righty Beau Brieske gets the nod for Detroit. First pitch is slated for 7:10 PM EST/4:10 PST.
Sox Make April A Distant Memory
Since May 10th the Boston Red Sox are the hottest team in the MLB with a 27-12 record. June has been good to them as they now have a 14-4 record after last night’s 5-2 victory.
Red Sox rookie Josh Winckowski shined in his 3rd start of his career. He threw 6.2 innings while scattering seven hits and allowing only two earned runs. That’s two dynamite performances in a row for the youngster, albeit against Oakland and Detroit.
Two other up and comers stepped up at the plate as first baseman Franchy Cordero went 3 for 4 with two RBI and leadoff man Jarren Duran went 2 for 3 with two runs scored.
After a brutal April Boston has bounced back and they now rank 8th in both runs scored and OPS. Red Sox Nation hands the ball to the 42 year-old southpaw Rich Hill with hopes of another W.
The ageless “Dick Mountain” isn’t going to give you a ton of innings, but he is crafty enough to limit a watered-down lineup like Detroits. It will help that current Tiger hitters are only 12 for 59 against Hill for a .199 batting average, .252 OPS and only one home run.
Tigers Remain Toothless
Another lifeless performance from the Detroit Tigers as they lost 5-2 last night at Fenway. The newly acquired Javy Baez may finally be coming around as he went 2 for 4 with two doubles.
Still Baez is only hitting .200 with four home runs on the season. Rookie starter Alex Faedo tossed only 4.1 innings while allowing five runs on eight hits.
It was a typical performance for an offensive attack that ranks dead last in runs scored and 29th in both OPS and batting average. They are also the worst road team in the majors hands down with an 8-19 record. The young right-hander Beau Brieske has been rock solid for the Tigers, especially recently.
In his last two outings he has thrown a total of 12.2 shutout innings against the Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays. However, he doesn’t strike out a lot of batters and he has proven to be vulnerable on the road with an 0-4 record and 4.97 ERA.
Boston Red Sox vs Detroit Tigers Prediction
The Boston Red Sox are favored by -195 on the money line, while the Detroit Tigers sit at +165 with a total of 9. This is an easy one for me as the Tigers are basically can’t be backed right now.
Detroit simply cannot generate runs and Rich Hill is smart and crafty enough to limit them. Brieske has struggled on the road and pitching to contact is recipe for disaster against the Red Sox buzzsaw offense.
The Red Sox are on fire with a 14-4 June record, while the Tigers are a league worst 8-19 away from home. At this price there is only one direction to look and that is the Boston run line at +105 odds.
Prediction: Boston Red Sox -1.5 -105
