Boston Red Sox vs Oakland Athletics Analysis
The Oakland Athletics and Boston Red Sox begin a three series from Fenway Park on Tuesday night. The Red Sox prevailed in a three game series against the Seattle Mariners after winning the rubber game 2-0.
The Athletics lost three of four in Cleveland against the Guardians. Boston will hope starter Nick Pivetta can continue his winning ways, while the young lefty Jared Koenig will hope to rebound from an ugly MLB debut. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST/4:30 PST.
Sox Come Home On Fire
The Boston Red Sox come into this game a winners of 8 of 10 games during the West Coast road trip that started with a three game sweep over the Oakland Athletics. The beat the Mariners 2-0 behind a two run blast by Rafael Devers and a solid combined effort in what was essentially a bullpen game.
The Red Sox outscored the Athletics by a combined score of 20-4 in their three game set out. The Sox offense ranks 5th in runs scored with 4.7 per game while ranking 5th with a .254 batting average and 8th with a .726 OPS.
Red Sox Nation will watch Nick Pivetta toe the rubber on Tuesday night. Pivetta is 5-5 on the season with a 3.78 ERA but he has been sharp recently winning five of his last six starts.
A’s Punchless Offense
The Oakland Athletics have now lost 14 of their last 16 games after losing their last game 6-3 in Cleveland against the Guardians. Ramon Laureano, Christian Bethancourt and Seth Brown all hit solo homeruns to account for the three runs.
Lefty Cole Irvin had a rough outing, allowing five runs on six hits in 5.2 innings pitched. This Athletics offense is truly lifeless as they score 3.4 runs a game which is second least in the league. They also are dead last in batting average and second to last in both OPS and home runs.
They will rookie southpaw Jared Koenig to the hill on Tuesday. Koenig was lit up by the Atlanta Braves in his first start for four runs on five hits in only 4 innings of work. He won’t last long and will be backed by a bullpen that is struggling too.
Boston Red Sox vs Oakland Athletics Prediction
The Boston Red Sox are favored by a -225 money line, with the Oakland Athletics at +185 and a total of 9.5. Not only has Oakland lost 14 of their last 16 but 11 of those losses have been by the run line.
Pivetta has allowed one run or less in five of his last seven outings. Current Athletics batters hit .095 against Pivetta with a .115 xBA, 34.8% strikeout rate and only one home run in 64 plate appearances.
The Braves rake against lefties and they crushed Koenig in his first outing. The Sox are 11-4 against left-handed starters this season, so they should make quick work of the youngster Koenig.
After Koenig it’s the A’s pen who ranks dead last in both ERA at 7.55 and FIP at 5.78 over the last two weeks. Boston has every advantage in this one, let’s take them on the run line.
Prediction: Boston Red Sox -1.5 -115
