Boston Red Sox vs Oakland Athletics Analysis

The Oakland Athletics and Boston Red Sox meet for the second game of a three game set on Wednesday night from Fenway Park.

The Red Sox cruised to an easy 6-1 victory last night behind eight strong innings from Nick Pivetta. The Athletics are floundering as they have now lost 12 of their last 13 games.

Josh Winckowski will make his second career start for Boston, while Oakland turns to James Kaprielian to right the ship. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST/4:10 PST.

Sox Keep Stacking Wins

The Boston Red Sox started off their homestand with a 6-1 victory after an outstanding 8-2 West Coast road trip.

Rafael Devers once again delivered the a major blow with a three-run blast in the 4th inning and the Sox never looked back. Nick Pivetta continued his torrid pace with eight innings of one run baseball.

The Red Sox average 4.7 runs per game which ranks them 9th in the league. They have the 5th best team batting average at .255 and the 8th best OPS at .729. Josh Winckowski will be making his second start of the season after a brutal debut.

On May 28th, the 23 year-old righty gave up four earned runs on six hits in only three innings against the Baltimore Orioles. However he has a great chance for bounce back against a weak Oakland offense.

A’s Getting F’s Across The Board

The Oakland Athletics knew they were looking at a rebuilding year after their off-season firesale but they didn’t expect things to spiral out of control this quickly.

They have lost 15 of their last 17 games and their 21-42 record gives them sole possession of dead last in the American League West.

The only team with a worse record is the Kansas City Royals, they A’s also rank second to last in runs scored with only 3.4 a game. The A’s are basically a bottom five offense across the board statistically.

Oakland needs a strong start to turn the tied but I’m not sure James Kaprielian is the man for the job. He is 0-3 with a 5.79 ERA across his eight starts. Backing him up is a bullpen that ranks dead last in ERA & FIP in the last two weeks.

Boston Red Sox vs Oakland Athletics Prediction

The Boston Red Sox are heavily favored at -180, while the Oakland Athletics sit at +155 and a total of 9.5. You would think this is the Athletics opportunity for a rare victory facing spot starter Josh Winckowski.

However, Kaprielian has been equally as bad over a longer span of time. The Red Sox also have a decisive edge in hitting and they will surely be licking their chops against this horrendous Oakland staff. I just don’t see another way to look another than the Boston Red Sox on the -100 run line.

Prediction: Boston Red Sox -1.5 -100
