Boston Red Sox vs St. Louis Cardinals Analysis
The St. Louis Cardinals will meet the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park for the first game of a three game interleague series on Friday night.
The Red Sox fell a run short of a sweep against the Oakland Athletics but have still won 11 of their last 14 games. Meanwhile the Cardinals fell two runs shy of a four game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates but still lead the National League Central with a 37-28 record.
Former teammates will go toe-to-toe as the mentor Adam Wainwright faces his former protégé in Michael Wacha. Should be an amazing contest with first pitch scheduled for 7:10 PM EST/4:10 PST.
Wainwright Faces Former Protégé
The St. Louis Cardinals travel to Boston after winning three of four home games against the Pittsburgh Pirates. They just missed the sweep after being edged out 6-4, with the Pirates scoring two runs in the top of the 7th inning.
Jack Flaherty was only able to pitch three innings while giving up two runs in his first start of the season. Third baseman Brendan Donovan went 3 for 4 with 3 RBI and a double. The veteran ace Adam Wainwright gets the nod for St. Louis on Friday night.
Wainwright has been the leader of the Cardinals rotation for over 15 years and is quite familiar with starting pitching counterpart Michael Wacha.
Wacha joined the team as a young pitcher back in 2013 and pitched under Wainwrights tutelage for the next seven seasons.
This season Wainwright has been as crafty as ever, with a 5-4 record, 2.84 ERA and 1.23 WHIP. “Uncle Charlie” tossed a solid seven innings of three run baseball in his last outing against the Cincinnati Reds.
The Cardinals will back him with an offensive attack that ranks top ten in runs, hits, RBI, walks and batting average. A big piece of that has been the resurgence of slugger Paul Goldschmidt who is top five in N.L. in batting average and RBI.
Wacha Faces Former Teammates
The Boston have been enjoying some home cooking as they enter this series winning two of three against the Oakland Athletics. Rich Hill gave his team a chance, but it wasn’t enough as he allowed four runs (three earned) in 5.2 innings in the loss.
J.D. Martinez had three hits and an RBI. Even after the loss the Red Sox have baseballs best record since May 1st with an 11-3 record in their last 14 games.
Michael Wacha will get the ball against his former team and mentor. Wacha joined the Cardinals organization and played their foe seven seasons with Adam Wainwright being the leader of the staff.
Wacha has been revitalized in Boston with a 4-1 record, 2.33 ERA and 1.00 WHIP across 54 innings of work. Although he wasn’t quite as sharp last time out with with four runs allowed on eight hits in only 4.1 innings pitched.
He will be backed by a Boston offense that is top ten, if not top five in almost any offensive category you could imagine.
Boston Red Sox vs St. Louis Cardinals Prediction
We have a true pick’em with a -110 money line for both sides and a total of 10.5. This is a very evenly matched series between similar offenses and staffs.
You have to give St. Louis an edge in the pitching department, however Bostons lineup has a slight edge as well. The Cardinals just lost their series finale against a struggling Pirates team.
The Red Sox are coming off a rare loss but they intentionally used arguably their worst starter after outscoring Oakland 16-2 in the prior two games. This isn’t my most confident play on the board, but I will make a small play on the Red Sox bats to get the job done at home.
Prediction: Boston Red Sox -113
