Boston Red Sox vs Tampa Bay Rays Analysis
The Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox continue to fight for positioning in the American League East as they play the rubber match of a three game set on Wednesday from Fenway Park. The Rays prevailed yesterday with an 8-4 victory after the Red Sox won the first game 4-0.
Pitching Keeps Tampa In The Hunt
We are basically at the halfway point in the season and the Rays pitching staff is 4th in both ERA and WHIP, despite dealing with several injuries. Last night the bats needed to get the job done as Jeffrey Springs only lasted 4 innings while allowing three runs. Yandy Diaz went 3 for 5 with an RBI double.
For the most part Tampa needs better pitching performances as they rank 23rd in batting average and 26th in runs scored. Regardless of how they got there, they are separated by only a game behind Boston in the Wild Card standings.
Corey Kluber will toe the rubber for the Rays on Wednesday night. The 36 year-old Kluber is 3-5 on the season with a 3.91 ERA and 1.16 WHIP. He allowed four runs on 11 hits in five innings of work in his lone start against Boston this season.
Sox Fight For Wild Card Lead
The Boston Red Sox will look to win another series after watching the opportunity for a sweep pass them by after losing 8-4 last night. Nick Pivetta had a rare horrible outing as he allowed seven runs on eight hits in only 5.2 innings pitched. J.D. Martinez went 3 for 5 and Trevor Story & Xander Bogaerts both hit homeruns.
The Boston lineup is an absolute juggernaut behind big names, they rank No. 1 in batting average and 9th in both runs scored and slugging percentage. They are also getting the job done on the mound as they sit 6th in ERA, WHIP and batting average against.
The bullpen will need to shine on Wednesday as the 23 year-old Brayan Bello makes his debut. It has nothing to do with his talent level, but it almost surely be a short outing as he can’t be fully stretched out for major league action.
Boston Red Sox vs Tampa Bay Rays Prediction
This one is a tough call from a side perspective. However the Red Sox should have no trouble scoring some runs off Kluber and I can’t imagine Bello doesn’t get touched up a bit as well. The Sox bullpen is definitely a weakness until they start getting some arms back and the Rays are good enough to take advantage. Let’s roll with over 9 in this one.
Prediction: OVER 9 Runs (-120)
