Cardinals vs Royals Analysis
The Cardinals’ final game of their opening series vs the Pirates was postponed yesterday. Now, St. Louis will continue their homestand for the first two games of this series as the Kansas City Royals come to town.
The Royals split their opening series vs the Cleveland Guardians. Dakota Hudson will start for the Cardinals and lefty Daniel Lynch will take the bump for the Royals.
Hudson on the Mend
The Cardinals won their opening series against the Pirates and are looking to carry that momentum over to this series. St. Louis will start Dakota Hudson in the first game of this series.
Last season, Hudson underwent Tommy John surgery and saw very limited action. Hudson only pitched 8.2 innings, so there is not much information on how he will bounce back.
Hudson is making his first appearance this season since the surgery, and it is anticipated that he stays on a pitch count. Hudson only threw five innings in spring training and is probably not ready for a full-time workload.
Prevent the Long Ball
The Royals opened the 2022 season with two low-scoring wins against the Guardians. The next two games, well, certainly were not low-scoring and did not go in the Royals’ favor. Cleveland put up a 17-spot in a 17-3 win then a 10-spot in a closer 10-7 win.
The Royals are starting rookie Daniel Lynch. The 25-year-old lefty started 15 games last season and posted a 5.69 ERA and a 1.632 WHIP. Lynch should have a rough time with this Cardinals lineup that relies heavily on the long ball. Lynch allowed nine home runs in just 68 innings last season.
Cardinals vs Royals Prediction
Tonight’s pitching matchup features two guys starting with a ton of questions. Lynch got shelled in his first taste of Big League action while Hudson is coming back from a terrible injury.
The Cardinals batted .269 in their first series while the Royals batted a measly .209. The Cardinals are clearly the better ball club, and to win this game, Lynch needs to be great and their lineup needs to produce. Both are big asks. I like the Cardinals -160 to handle business at home in the first game of this series.
