Chicago Cubs vs Milwaukee Brewers Analysis
The Brewers will trot out No. 2 starter Brandon Woodruff while the Cubs will send lefty rookie Justin Steele to the hill. The Cubs used five relief pitchers to preserve yesterday’s win. With the Cubs using a young starting pitcher, will bullpen usage come into play this afternoon?
Patience at the Plate
The Cubs went up against the reigning NL Cy Young yesterday afternoon and tagged him for three runs and forced three walks. The Cubs showed tremendous plate discipline and were opportunistic. A two-run home run from Nico Hoerner kicked off the run-scoring for the Cubs, and when Chicago had runners in scoring position, Chicago was able to plate them.
Today, Chicago will face one of the top pitchers in the NL in Brandon Woodruff. After taking down Burnes last night, Chicago should have confidence in this matchup.
However, the uncertainty lies with the Cubs starting pitcher. Justin Steele appeared in 20 games last season and pitched decently. Chicago is expecting Steele to take a step forward this season, and his first task will be to beat the reigning NL Central champions.
Pressure the Rookie
Corbin Burnes let up one of the fewest amounts of walks as a starter in the majors last season, yet he walked the first batter he faced last night and had three in just five innings.
In today’s matchup, the Brewers should certainly have the edge on the mound. Woodruff came in fifth in Cy Young voting last year and has improved considerably over the past two seasons. I expect Woodruff to challenge the Cubs lineup today.
I also expect the Brewers to put pressure on Justin Steele and force the young pitcher to make mistakes. Steele does a great job of limiting fly balls, but I expect his inexperience to show in the second game of the season.
Chicago Cubs vs Milwaukee Brewers Prediction
I think the Brewers even up the series and take today’s game vs the Cubs. It is expected to be windy at Wrigley today, but Woodruff is a low-contact specialist who limits hitters to 43.4% ground balls. I like the Brewers on the moneyline today.
