Chicago White Sox vs Cleveland Guardians Analysis
Major League Baseball is back in action Friday night as the Chicago White Sox host Cleveland Guardians in the first game of a four game set from Guaranteed Rate Field.
This is a critical series as the resurgent White Sox evened out their record at 46-46 look to gain ground on the 46-44 Guardians. Both teams sit only two and three games behind the MinnesotaTwins respectively.
Cal Quantrill gets the start for Cleveland, while Lucas Giolito toes the rubber for Chicago, they are both righties with 6-5 records who are separated by less than a year age-wise. First pitch is scheduled for 8:10 PM EST/5:10 PST.
White Sox Making Their Move
The Chicago White Sox entered this season as the favorite to win the American League Central but they got off to a slow start mostly due to injuries.
They began heating up before the break, winning 11 of 18 and 5 of their last 6 games. They enter this contest at 46-46 in third place, only three games behind the Minnesota Twins.
The Pale Hose are a mixed bag offensively, 15th in runs scored, 3rd in batting average, 24th in home runs and 18th in slugging percentage.
Lucas Giolito gets the nod for Chicago, he is 6-5 on the season with a 4.69 ERA in 16 starts. Giolito has owned the Guardians with a 2-0 record, 0.68 ERA and 10 strikeouts in two outings against them.
Guarding Their Ground
The Cleveland Guardians ended the first half winning five of their last seven games, resulting in a 46-44 record. They ended on a high note with a sweep of the Detroit Tigers.
They now sit a game ahead of the Chicago White Sox and two games behind the MinnesotaTwins in the division. The Guardians rank similar to the Pale Hose in statistically at 16th in runs scored, 9th in batting average, 28th in home runs and 19th in slugging percentage.
Cal Quantrill gets the start for Cleveland on Friday night to open the second half. Quantrill is 6-5 on the season with a 3.75 ERA in 15 outings. He blanked the Detroit Tigers for six innings in his last start while only allowing four hits and two walks.
However he has struggled with the White Sox, he is 1-1 with a 5.84 ERA and only six strikeouts across two starts.
Chicago White Sox vs Cleveland Guardians Prediction
The Chicago White enter this contest as -150 money line favorites, while the Cleveland Guardians sit at +135 with a total of 8.5. Both these teams ended the first half on hot streaks and both have similar records and offensive units.
Both starters rank closely statistically on the season as well, however Giolito has been filthy against the Guardians throughout his career. He sports a 5-3 record with a 1.77 ERA and 81 strikeouts across 12 appearances.
The Guardians do have a slightly better bullpen, but I favor the Pale Hose bats as they aren’t as reliant on one individual player like Jose Ramirez. Let’s just keep the bullpens out of it and take the Chicago White Sox -0.5 in the first five at -115 odds.
Prediction: Chicago White Sox -0.5 F5 -115 DK (first five innings)
