Cleveland Guardians vs Texas Rangers Analysis

The Texas Rangers travel to Progressive Field in Cleveland to kick off a three game series against the Guardians on Monday night.

The Guardians prevailed in two of three games against the Orioles in Baltimore this weekend. Meanwhile the Rangers dropped two of three home games against the Seattle Mariners.

Second generation starter Cal Quantrill gets the nod for Cleveland, while veteran righty Jon Gray takes the mound for Texas. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST/4:10 PST.

Plenty of Gray Area

The Texas Rangers were unable to protect a 5-2 lead in the ninth inning against the Seattle Mariners and ended up locked in a 5-5 tie in extra innings.

Seattle scored again in the top of the 10th and the Rangers were unable to plate a run resulting in a 6-5 loss. Martin Perez churned out another strong outing as he allowed only two runs in six innings of work but the bullpen couldn’t finish the job.

It’s a little surprising as the Texas bullpen ranks 10th with a 3.45 ERA. Marcus Semien and Mitch Garver both went 2 for 5 with a homerun each. The Rangers are truly middle of the pack at 25-28 they currently occupy 3rd place in the American League West.

Free agent acquisitions Marcus Semien and Corey Seager have both fallen well short of expectations with .194 and .232 batting averages. This has resulted in a Rangers offense that ranks 21st in OPS, 22nd in batting average and 19th in wRC+, again just below average.

The 30 year-old Jon Gray should be sprinting to mound as he’s coming off his best start of the season. The 6’4” righty hurled seven innings of one run baseball, while allowing only three hits and mowing down 12 batters. Gray is 1-2 on the season with a 4.83 ERA and 1.22 WHIP.

Quantrill Needs Run Support

The Cleveland Guardians held on for a 3-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles to complete a 2-1 series victory. Second baseman Andres Gimenez hit a three-run blast in the 1st inning and that was all it took.

Young starter Zach Plesac tossed six innings and allowed two runs in the 4th but that was it. The Guardians utilized the bullpen that ranks 4th in ERA to cover three innings of shutout baseball.

Cleveland’s offense ranks 17th in runs scored and just above or below average across the board. However they do rank 7th in batting average but only 18th in OPS and 13th in wRC+.

They really heavily on potential MVP candidate Jose Ramirez, who’s 53 RBI are tied for most in the MLB. The Guardians turn to 27 year-old righty Cal Quantrill, who has a 2-3 record, 3.52 ERA and 1.19 WHIP across 53 plus innings.

Quantrill has turned in quality starts in six of his last seven outings, however Cleveland has only managed a 2-5 record in those starts. In his last start he allowed three runs on six hits and no walks across 6.1 innings of work. The bats backed him up and it led to an 8-3 victory over Kansas City.

Cleveland Guardians vs Texas Rangers Prediction

This game is just about a pick’em as the money line sits at -115 for the Cleveland Guardians and -105 for the Texas Rangers with a total of 9. Both teams will feature starters who should be able to limit the opposing lineup as neither is lighting the world on fire.

However, Quantrill is more consistent and the Guardians bats are more potent. The under is 10-3-1 in the Rangers last 14 road games and 5-1 in the Guardians last 6 home games.

Both teams also have an above average bullpen, so the under could be worth a play here. However, the Rangers have really struggled on the road over the last few seasons, with a 27-61 record in their last 88 games.

Set that aside, the Guardians have advantages in hitting and both starting and relief pitching. They might be slight edges in some cases, but they are in better current form and playing at home. It doesn’t hurt that the money line is only -115. Give me the Guardians!

Prediction: Cleveland Guardians -115
