Colorado Rockies vs Arizona Diamondbacks Analysis
The Colorado Rockies host the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first of a three game weekend series. The Rockies split the first two games of their series with the Cardinals and the third game was still in progress as of this writing, and Arizona split their first two games with the Pirates, with the third game also still in progress.
Zach Davies will toe the rubber for the Snakes and Antonio Senzatela takes the bump for the Rox. First pitch at Coors Field is scheduled for 8:40 PM EDT.
Both teams are in the bottom of the NL West as Arizona is 4th with a 50-60 mark and the Rockies are last with a 49-64 record. The D-backs have played better than expected this year, while the Rockies are where most baseball analysts (including yours truly) thought they’d be at this part of the season.
Davies Average For Diamondbacks
Right-hander Zach Davies has had a decent season for Arizona with a 2-4 record, 4.02 ERA with a 1.22 WHIP in 87.0 innings. He’s not overpowering and more of a pitch-to-contact hurler, as he’s only struck out 66 hitters on the year – which is 6.82 Ks per nine innings.
This kind of pitcher has usually not fared well at Coors Field. Miles Mikolas of the Cardinals was a recent example, as he got shelled for 14 hits and 10 earned runs Tuesday night.
Davies has faced the Rockies twice this season at Chase Field, with good results. In those two home starts and 11.1 innings, Davies allowed 11 hits and zero earned runs, but his last start was against Colorado earlier this week on August 7th. If a team can see a pitcher twice in the same week, that’s an edge for the opposing hitters.
Rockies Rocking Baseball Recently
Antonio Senzatela has had a 2022 season that he’d like to forget. The Rockies righty has posted a 3-6 record, 4.68 ERA with a Rocky Mountain high 1.68 WHIP. “Senza” has limited walks and home runs with just 20 and nine of each, respectively. But the rest of his numbers aren’t what you’d like to see from a major league starter.
He’s only struck out 50 hitters in 84 innings and opposing hitters’ batting average is .351. Senzatela just hasn’t been able to miss that many bats, and that’s a big problem in any MLB ballpark – but especially in Coors Field.
The Rockies have hit right-handed pitching very well at home this year, with the 2nd best OPS and best team batting average, and they get to see Zach Davies for the second time in just six days, in the most hitter-friendly park in baseball.
Colorado Rockies vs Arizona Diamondbacks Prediction
Colorado is a short favorite as of this writing, both bullpens are equally bad and I don’t see much of an edge for either starting pitcher.
Davies has better numbers than Senzatela, but this will be the third game this season he’s faced the Rockies. The purple pinstripers have hit right-handers very well at home, and I think the visitors will touch up Davies for at least a few runs. That’s why I’ll take the over in tonight’s matchup.
