Colorado Rockies vs Arizona Diamondbacks Analysis
The Arizona Diamondbacks travel to Coors Field to take on the Colorado Rockies in the first of a three game series. Merrill Kelly takes the mound against Antonio Senzatela.
The Snakes split a two-game set with the Padres and dropped two of three to the Tigers at Chase Field. The Rockies surprised the Dodgers this week, taking two of three games at home. Colorado is the favorite at -114 and the Snakes are a +104 dog, with the run total at 11.5.
Arizona Diamondbacks Betting Preview
Merrill Kelly is one of Arizona’s better pitchers with solid numbers for the season. But he hasn’t pitched well in the hitters’ paradise known as Coors Field.
Over 17.2 innings, Kelly has compiled a 8.15 ERA at 20th and Blake, which shows that even when the Rockies are a mediocre team (which is just about every year), they’re still dangerous on offense at home.
Although their record is much improved over last year, their offensive stats are nothing to write home about.
The D-Backs average just 4.05 runs per game and have the 4th-worst OPS at .667. They’ve been bailed out mainly by the long ball, as they’re 12th best in long flies with 86.
Colorado Rockies Betting Preview
The Rockies have been what we’ve expected from them: An exciting offensive team at home with mediocre pitching and lots of runs scored. The one exception has been a lack of home runs.
They’re just 22nd in MLB in long balls with 69. C.J. Cron and Charlie Blackmon have the most bombs in the lineup with 17 and 12, and the rest of the roster is below double digits.
Antonio Senzatela has had a difficult season with a 4.66 ERA and 1.78 WHIP in 12 starts and 58.0 innings. He’s been able to go fairly deep in most games and eat innings, but he hasn’t been able to miss many bats, striking out just 33 hitters all year.
That comes to about five Ks per nine innings, not what you want to see from a major league starter. However, he’s limited home runs as opposing hitters only have four bombs off the veteran righty this year.
Colorado Rockies vs Arizona Diamondbacks Prediction
Arizona has struggled at the plate most of the year, although they will get a boost hitting at altitude. While Senzatela isn’t a great pitcher by any stretch of the imagination, he’s good at limiting what the D-Backs are good at: Hitting home runs.
The Rox are playing well at home and the visiting team has been scuffling its last few games. Taking two of three from the Dodgers is a good momentum boost coming into this series. That’s why I’ll take the Rockies on the moneyline.
Prediction: Colorado Rockies Moneyline
