Colorado Rockies vs Arizona Diamondbacks Analysis

The Arizona Diamondbacks travel a mile high to play the Colorado Rockies in the first of a three game weekend series.

The Snakes dropped two of three to the Padres in San Diego after they took three of four from the Brewers at home. The Rox took two of three from Milwaukee at home after dropping two of three from the Reds in Cincinnati.

It’s a battle of right-handers as Zac Davies goes against German Marquez, first pitch is scheduled for 8:40 PM EDT / 5:40 PM PDT.

Arizona Aiming For 2023 Season Revival

The playoff hopes of Arizona are fading, as they’re 9.5 games back of the Phillies for the final wild card berth with just 26 games to play, but they’ve still had a much better season than last year’s 51-win campaign, and their plan to rebuild the team seems to be right on track.

McCarthy, Thomas and Carroll are a solid core of outfielders, and they may have found a new #3 starting pitcher in Ryne Nelson.

Looking ahead to next year, this is a “bet on” team for me as I like the talent on this team and the plan that general manager Mike Hazen put into place. This team will be a playoff contender in 2023, and if they can upgrade the bullpen, they will be really dangerous.

Zac Davies isn’t an over-powering pitcher, but he’s put up solid numbers for the Snakes in 2022. In 22 starts and 113.0 innings, he’s put up a 2-4 record, a 3.74 ERA with a 1.21 WHIP and 85 strikeouts.

The right-hander isn’t an innings eater as he averages just over 5.0 frames per start. But he’s a solid, reliable major league starter who can keep your team in the game most nights before handing it off to the bullpen.

Marquez Bad At Home

It’s been a tough season for German Marquez as he’s posted his second highest ERA of his career, next to his rookie year in 2016. The right-hander has a 4.86 Earned Run Average with a 1.36 WHIP in 26 starts and 153.2 innings. While he had a bad first half of the season, he’s pitched a lot better from July through early September.

Last year most Rockies starters pitched better at 20th and Blake than on the road, but that hasn’t been the case this year for Marquez.

In 14 home starts and 78.1 innings, he’s posted a 2-5 record, a 6.09 ERA with a 1.53 WHIP and 72 strikeouts. Strikeout numbers are still decent, however, he hasn’t been able to miss enough bats – and that’s a problem at the major league level.

Colorado Rockies vs Arizona Diamondbacks Prediction

The Diamondbacks have the better starting pitcher in this matchup, and both bullpens are a dumpster fire.

The over/under and team total numbers don’t seem to make sense, as the run total is 10, team over/under run totals are 4.5 each and Vegas is saying that the Rockies are more likely to go over this total than Arizona.

When I look at team OPS versus right-handers the last 30 days, the Snakes are 7th best while the Rockies are 29th. But the Rox did score a combined 22 runs in their three game series at home versus the Brewers.

As you can tell I’m really bullish on Arizona’s young talent at the plate, and can’t wait to see how they hit in Coors Canaveral. That’s why I’ll take the Diamondbacks team total over 4.5 runs scored.

Prediction: Diamondbacks Team Total Over 4.5 Runs Scored
