Colorado Rockies vs Atlanta Braves Analysis
The Atlanta Braves come calling to Coors Field to take on the Colorado Rockies, after Atlanta dropped two of three in Arizona and the Rox took two of three from the Marlins at home.
Right-hander Ian Anderson takes the mound against southpaw Austin Gomber.Atlanta is a -150 favorite, Colorado a +130 dog, the total is 12 with the over at -105 and the under slightly juiced at -115.
Atlanta Braves Betting Analysis
The Braves’ hitting has come around during the month of May, as they’re tied for fifth best OPS against left-handers with the White Sox at .760.
Staff pitching hasn’t improved as quickly, but Atlanta didn’t really start to get in top form until the second half of last year. They could be another “late bloomer” staff who could have used a regular length spring training.
Anderson has pitched well in six of his nine starts, but two of the three worse ones were his last two outings, both against Miami. We’ll see if this is the start of a trend, or just a bad matchup.
Colorado Rockies Betting Analysis
Yesterday at Coors Field was “back to the future” to the late 90’s Blake Street Bomber-type games: Not a lot of good pitching, and plenty of offensive fireworks. Miami took game one 14 to 1, and Colorado came back to take game two in extras, 13 to 12.
While the Rox are the best hitting team versus left-handed pitching, they’re pretty average against righties, 15th in team OPS.
Although the Rockies pitchers got blown up yesterday, Austin Gomber has been a bright spot throwing at Coors Field. His last three home starts have been quality starts, where he pitched at least 6.0 innings and gave up three or less earned runs.
Colorado will need another good outing to give them a chance to win, because their bullpen is last in staff ERA at 5.20. The Braves relief corps is solid with an 8th best ERA in MLB, and it’s obvious the visitors have a pitching edge later in games.
Colorado Rockies vs Atlanta Braves Prediction
This game is tricky to handicap because of Gomber’s success at Coors Field, the Rockies average hitting against right handers like Ian Anderson and Atlanta teeing off on southpaws.
The Rockies starter is the key to this game. If he doesn’t pitch well, their chances to win are slim unless they just outscore the Braves. I don’t think the Braves bullpen will be as bad as the Marlins were in game 2 on Wednesday.
The visitors have played and pitched better than the Rox in the last couple of weeks, that’s why I’ll lean to Atlanta on the money line.
