Colorado Rockies vs Chicago White Sox Analysis

The Chicago White Sox will finish a quick two-game set with the Colorado Rockies in Coors Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The Sox took game one by a count of 2-1, and it’ll be a battle of right-handers as Lucas Giolito takes the mound against Antonio Senzatela. First pitch is scheduled for 3:10 EST / 12:10 PM PST.

What’s Going Wrong For Giolito?

2022 hasn’t gone as expected for Lucas Giolito. The White Sox’ ace has a 5.12 ERA, 6-6 record with a 1.46 WHIP in 17 starts and 91.1 innings. His strikeout stuff is still strong as he has 104Ks on the season – more than one per inning – but he’s been hit harder than normal in recent years.

Although the Rockies don’t hit right-handers as well as southpaws, this isn’t an ideal spot for a struggling righty coming into the most hitter-friendly park in MLB.

The south-siders’ offense has been about average, with a 15th best runs per game at 4.41. And the pitching has been a little below average with an 18th best staff ERA at 4.02. This club was hit by injuries earlier in the season, and manager Tony LaRussa doesn’t seem to be the skipper he used to be.

Although he’s more than likely a first-ballot Hall of Famer, his days in the White Sox dugout are probably numbered – whether Chicago makes the playoffs or not.

Cron is King in Colorado

Antonio Senzatela is another struggling right handed pitcher who’s had a terrible season. In 14 starts and 65.0 innings, he’s put up a 4.98 ERA and a mile-high 1.78 WHIP with just 38 strikeouts.

Although he hasn’t missed as many bats as you’d like to see, he has kept long flies and free passes to a minimum – allowing just seven home runs and 16 walks.

He has pitched well in late June and July, only giving up three earned runs or less – but allowed at least six hits – in five of his last six starts. His career numbers aren’t anything to write home about, with a 4.86 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP.

“Senza” is a serviceable major league starter who knows how to pitch in Coors Field, and can usually go at least five to six innings in most starts.

The Rockies can still hit the baseball, especially in the friendly confines of Coors Field. They have the 3rd best OPS at home against right handed pitchers at .782, and are 2nd in team batting average at .275.

C.J. Cron is the team’s MVP and main power source with a .287 average, .878 OPS with 22 home runs and 70 RBI. Charlie Blackmon has the second most long flies with 15, and no other Rocky has more than nine home runs.

While Colorado still takes advantage of the largest outfield in MLB to produce hits and runs, this isn’t the home-run hitting version of the Rockies that we’ve seen before in previous seasons.

The Rockies are just 22nd best for home runs with 91. League-wide use of the humidour for baseballs and fewer power hitters in the Colorado lineup are why we’ve seen more lower-scoring games at Coors Field in 2022.

Colorado Rockies vs Chicago White Sox Prediction

Given Giolito and Senzatela’s recent form, this could be a higher scoring game Wednesday afternoon. The Rockies are 7-3 in their last 10 home games, are 28-23 at Coors Field for the season, and seem to have regained the home field advantage at 20th and Blake.

We’re getting plus money and good value on the home underdog, and the market may be slightly overrating the visiting pitcher and underrating the home hurler. That’s why I’ll take the Rockies on the moneyline.

Prediction: Colorado Rockies Moneyline
