Colorado Rockies vs Cleveland Guardians Analysis
The Cleveland Guardians take on the Colorado Rockies in Coors Field for the second of a three game series. The G’s needed an extra frame but got the win Tuesday night 4-3 in 10 innings.
Shane Bieber and Antonio Senzatela both had quality starts, going 6.2 and 6.0 innings and giving up only three earned runs. Tonight southpaws Konnor Pilkington (1-0, 3.57 ERA) and Austin Gomber (3-6, 6.17 ERA) will get the start.
Cleveland Guardians Betting Preview
This game is a pick ’em with both sides at -110 for the moneyline, the run total opened at 11.5 and has now gone up to 12.
The books don’t have a lot of confidence in either starting pitcher, and when you look at the advanced analytics for both of them, it’s pretty obvious to see why.
Konnor Pilkington is a hard-throwing left-hander who can strike out a lot of hitters, and is making the switch from the bullpen to the starting rotation. But if he doesn’t get the Ks, bad things usually happen.
In 22.2 innings, seven appearances and four starts he has an ERA of 3.57, a bloated WHIP of 1.54 along with 25 strikeouts.
He’s only given up one home run, but has had some control issues, allowing 14 free passes – that’s almost six walks per nine innings, not a great ratio for a starting pitcher.
The G’s don’t hit left-handed pitching that well, with a 29th best OPS versus lefties of .628 and a .229 batting average.
Colorado Rockies Betting Preview
Austin Gomber started the season pitching pretty well, but got rocked in two of his last three outings. One was at Washington, where he went 1.1 innings, gave up seven hits and eight earned runs.
The other was at home versus Atlanta, where Gomber went 5.0 innings and gave up 10 hits and nine earned runs.
He did bounce back in his last start at San Francisco, going 6.0 innings and giving up five hits, two earned runs, one walk and struck out five.
While he doesn’t give up too much hard contact or walk many batters, he just doesn’t miss enough bats. He’s in the bottom 20th percentile of these categories: xwOBA, xERA, xBA, xSLG, Whiff % and Fastball Velocity.
While the Rockies have good season-long stats against southpaws with a 7th best OPS of .763 and a .282 average, the hitting has regressed the last few weeks. Overall, they’re just 15th in team OPS at .709 with a .257 batting average after being in the top 10 earlier this season.
Colorado Rockies vs Cleveland Guardians Prediction
When a pitcher makes his first start in Coors Field, it usually doesn’t go well. That’s what I think will happen to Pilkington in his first start at 20th and Blake.
I don’t have a lot of confidence in Gomber, but the Rox lefty has more experience pitching at altitude. I would tread and bet lightly on this game, but I’ll give a lean to Colorado on the full game moneyline.
