Colorado Rockies vs Cleveland Guardians Analysis
The Cleveland Guardians finish a three game series in Coors Field against the Colorado Rockies Thursday afternoon.
The G’s took game two last night by a score of 7-5, and tonight it’s a battle of right-handers with Triston McKenzie (3-5, 3.09 ERA) going against Chad Kuhl (4-3, 3.70 ERA). The visiting team is a -137 favorite while the home team is a +127 dog, with a run total of 11.5.
Cleveland Guardians Betting Preview
The Guardians hit right-handed pitching fairly well as they’re 12th in OPS at .724 with a .255 average. Their lineup is powered by third baseman Jose Ramirez, who has put up some really good numbers this season.
He’s hitting .307 with 16 home runs, 62 RBI and an OPS of 1.053, and should be a contender for American League MVP.
Starter Triston McKenzie is a talented pitcher with good numbers. In 11 starts and 64 innings he’s compiled a 3.09 ERA and 0.89 WHIP with 55 Ks. However, he has a big problem with the long ball. In his last two starts he’s given up five, and in his last five outings, he’s allowed 10 home runs.
The last three games were against the Tigers, Orioles and A’s, light-hitting teams without a lot of power. McKenzie needs to figure out how to keep the ball in the yard, or it could be a long afternoon.
Colorado Rockies Betting Preview
Chad Kuhl has done a pretty solid job for the Rockies since coming over from the Pirates. Six of his 11 starts have been considered quality starts – where he goes at least 6.0 innings and gives up three earned runs or less.
He’s pitched fairly well at home in four starts and 22.1 innings with a 3.22 ERA and 1.07 WHIP with 11 strikeouts, four walks and three home runs.
However, his last seven games have seen more crooked numbers than we saw from Kuhl earlier in the season.
In those seven starts and 34.2 innings, he’s put up a 4.93 ERA , a bloated 1.76 WHIP with 25 strikeouts and 17 walks. Control has been an issue as Kuhl issued seven free passes in his last two outings.
After a really good start to the season, the Rockies offense has tapered off to where they’re in the middle of the pack, with a 15th best OPS of .708 – but still have a 3rd best batting average of .257.
Colorado Rockies vs Cleveland Guardians Prediction
While both starting pitchers have sub-4 ERAs, their advanced analytics aren’t that good. After six straight home losses the Rockies should be due for a win, but I can’t trust the bullpen to hold a lead and close out a game.
I think we’ll see a repeat of Wednesday night’s game with a lot of runs scored and baseballs flying around Coors Field. That’s why I’ll take the full game over runs scored.
Prediction: Over 11.5 Total Runs Scored
