Colorado Rockies vs Los Angeles Dodgers Analysis
The Los Angeles Dodgers travel to Coors Field to take on the Colorado Rockies in the first of a four game series. Big Blue is 5-2 after the All-Star break, sweeping four from the Giants and losing two to Washington at home.
The Rockies split two games with the White Sox at home, and lost three of four to the Brewers in Milwaukee. Left-hander Tyler Anderson takes the mound against right-hander Jose Urena, first pitch is scheduled for 8:40 PM EDT / 5:40 PM PDT.
Anderson Angling For Another Win
Tyler Anderson and Tony Gonsolin have been two of the Dodgers’ best starting pitchers in 2022. Anderson has a 10-1 record with a 2.79 ERA, an outstanding 1.02 WHIP and 87 strikeouts in 16 starts and 103 innings. His control has been excellent and hasn’t made many mistakes, allowing just nine long flies and 19 walks year-to-date.
Anderson has had two starts in Colorado this season, the first was a 4.0 inning outing back in April where he gave up two hits and one earned run. The last one was June 27 where he went 6.0 innings and gave up 10 hits and four earned runs.
The Dodgers have hit right-handed pitching really well this season, as they have the 2nd best OPS against southpaws at .777 with 89 home runs and a fourth-best .256 team average. They should be able to touch up Jose Urena for at least a few runs on Thursday night.
Urena Needs To Keep It Together
Jose Urena is a recent addition to the Rockies rotation, and the veteran right-hander had some success in his first three starts. However, he struggled in his last start on July 23 in Milwaukee, giving up six hits and five earned runs in 5.1 innings of work.
In eight combined games, four starts and 31.2 innings with the Brewers and Rockies, his ERA is 3.13 with 17 strikeouts and a 1.42 WHIP.
C.J. Cron is the team’s MVP this season and got a well-deserved spot on the NL All-Star team. The Rox first baseman is hitting .286 with 22 home runs, 71 RBI and an .872 OPS.
Cron and Charlie Blackmon are the top home run hitters for the Rockies, as Chuck Nasty has 15 long flies. No other Rocky has more than nine, and the team is in the bottom 10 in team home runs, tied for 21st with the Reds at 92.
Colorado Rockies vs Los Angeles Dodgers Prediction
The Rockies are playing better baseball at home with a 29-23 record, and they’ve won four of six from the Dodgers at Coors Field this season. Big Blue has the better starting pitcher, better bullpen and lineup – but given Colorado’s success at home against them this year, it’s difficult to take LA on the run line.
Even the Rox battered bullpen has held its own at home most of the time against their division rival. And the books have the run total at 12, which is just about right and tough to find an edge or much value here.
Given the Dodgers’ success hitting right-handed pitching and facing a fair-to-middlin’ righty in Urena, I like them to put up hits and runs in this game early and often. That’s why my best bet for this game is LA 1st 5 innings over team total runs scored.
Prediction: Dodgers 1st 5 Innings Over Team Total Runs Scored (3.5)
