Colorado Rockies vs Pittsburgh Pirates Analysis
The Pittsburgh Pirates travel to Coors Field to take on the Colorado Rockies in the first of a three game series.
The Bucs come into today’s game having split a four game set in Miami versus the Marlins, and the Rox took three of four from the Padres at home. Southpaw Jose Quintana takes the bump against righty German Marquez, first pitch is scheduled for 8:40 Eastern time.
Quintana Key For Pirates Success
Coors Field has been known to be like a magical tonic for hitters, and the Pirates sure could use that right about now. The Bucs are 28th in OPS at .662 with a .220 team batting average, however, they’re 14th in home runs with 97.
One of the big surprises for the Pirates this year is veteran southpaw Jose Quintana. In 17 starts and 85 innings he has 3.59 ERA, a 1.31 WHIP with 78 strikeouts.
While it’s widely rumored that he’ll be dealt at the trade deadline and isn’t in the team’s long-term plans, he’s a quality pitcher who should find a new home with a playoff contender before August 1.
Rockies Rock Left Handed Pitching
Starter German Marquez has struggled mightily this year, and not just at Coors Field. In 17 starts and 91.0 innings he has a 5.66 ERA, a 1.47 WHIP and 81 strikeouts.
Control has been a big problem as he’s given up 37 walks and 18 home runs, which comes to almost four free passes and just under two long flies per nine innings.
The Rockies come into tonight’s game with good momentum as they took three of four from San Diego at home. While the Rockies still hit lefties well at home and on the road, their overall power numbers are down from past years. They’re tied for long flies with the Reds at 83 for the year.
Mid-Season Betting Tip
Here’s a betting tip that can increase your ROI in the second half of this MLB season. Take a look at the teams or totals you tend to bet most often, figure out your win (and and profit) rate, and examine the assumptions behind those bets.
Ask yourself: Are these assumptions still valid and true at the halfway point of this season? To paraphrase Ferris Bueller, things move pretty fast in Major League Baseball, and you need to stay current to give yourself the best chance to be successful.
So when you’re relaxing with the cold beverage of your choice, take a few minutes to do this simple task. It can result in more money in your accounts, and give you a better start to the pro and college football season. Enjoy your All-Star Break, take time to relax with family and friends and I’ll talk with you next week. Best of luck!
Colorado Rockies vs Pittsburgh Pirates Prediction
While Quintana is one of the Pirate’s better pitchers, he’s also a lefty – and Colorado hits lefties very well, especially at altitude. German Marquez has struggled all year no matter where he’s pitched, and has given up almost two home runs for every nine innings pitched.
When you combine these factors with two of the worst three bullpens in ERA in baseball, this looks like a recipe for a higher scoring affair. That’s why I’ll take the full game over.
Prediction: Over 11 Total Runs Scored
