Colorado Rockies vs Texas Rangers Analysis

The Colorado Rockies host the Texas Rangers Tuesday night in the first of a two game series. Texas won three of four in Minnesota, while the Rockies took two of three from the Giants at home.

Dane Dunning gets the start for the visitors and German Marquez takes the hill for the Rockies. First pitch is scheduled for 8:40 PM at Coors Field.

Neither team will make the postseason, so they’re playing out the regular season string. The Rangers are 11 games below .500 at 55-66, 3rd in the AL West, and Colorado is 53-70 in the basement of the NL West.

Ranger Eager to Play at Coors Field

Rangers starter Dane Dunning has had a fair to middlin’ season in 2022, but has pitched well in the month of August. In 23 starts he has a 4.06 ERA with a 1.37 WHIP and a 3-6 record. In three starts this month, the right-hander has a 2.60 ERA, a 2-0 record and a 0.98 WHIP.

Control has been an issue for Dunning at times this year, as he’s allowed 50 walks – which comes to 3.6 free passes per nine innings. This will be his first start this season versus the Rockies.

The Rangers’ pitching was rock solid in Minnesota, as they gave up just six runs in four combined games. But pitching at altitude is a whole different experience, as many major league pitchers will tell you.

The offense in recent games has been like most of the season: Inconsistent with an occasional burst of runs every so often, but they’ve hit plenty of home runs, tied for 9th most in baseball with the Twins and they’re coming to the most hitter-friendly park in baseball in Coors Field.

Marquez Not Making It Work

German Marquez’s season has been like a fine wine, which has gotten better with time. His season long numbers aren’t great, with a 5.05 ERA and 1.43 WHIP in 23 starts and 133.2 innings.

However, in his last seven starts he’s 2-3 with a 3.30 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP in 43 innings. And it’ll be the right-hander’s first start against the Rangers this year.

Colorado Rockies vs Texas Rangers Prediction

Both teams are pretty similar as both starters are in good current form, and they’re in the middle third in MLB hitting right-handed pitching. However, Marquez has struggled against left-handed hitters and Texas has six lefties or switch hitters in their lineup. I like the Rangers to score some runs early, that’s why I’ll take Texas team total over 2.5 runs scored in the first five innings.

Prediction: Texas 1st 5 Innings Team Total Over 2.5 Runs Scored
