Detroit Tigers vs Cleveland Guardians Analysis
The Cleveland Guardians and Detroit Tigers play the third game of a four game series from Comerica Park on Tuesday night. The Tigers won both games of yesterday’s doubleheader by a combined score of 9-4. The Guardians will be hoping they at least have the opportunity for a split on Wednesday night.
Tigers Sweep Double Dip
It seemed like the last thing the depleted Detroit Tigers pitching staff needed was a doubleheader. However, rookie Garrett Hill stepped up and threw six innings of two hit baseball to pick up the victory in the opener. In the nightcap, the Tigers rallied for single runs in the sixth and seven innings to earn a 5-3 victory. Johnathan Schoop had two singles to close out a six hit day, while Eric Haase hit his 6th homerun.
The Tigers have hands-down been the lowest scoring team in the league with an average of only 3.2 runs a game. However, they have improved by a full run per game while going 6-4 over their last 10 games. The right-hander Drew Hutchinson draws a start for the Tigers. He has only two quality starts in his 12 chances this season. He went 0-1 in June with a 5.19 ERA, while failing to get through the 5th inning in either start.
Guardians Of .500 Mark
Doubleheaders just haven’t been kind to the Guardians in recent days as they dropped a pair of games to the New York Yankees on Saturday followed by losing two more against Detroit yesterday. The Guardians bats were held in check in Game one by a rookie starter making his debut and earning a 4-1 victory. They managed only one run in that game, followed by scoring only three runs in the 4th inning of the nightcap and losing 5-3.
Cleveland now trails the Minnesota Twins by three games in the American League Central. They have had to cram six games into four days and have only averaged 2.7 runs a game during that span while going 2-4. Cal Quantrill will be tasked with righting the ship on Tuesday evening. He has nine quality starts in 14 outings and is 2-1 with a 4.06 ERA in June.
Detroit Tigers vs Cleveland Guardians Prediction
The Guardians are now desperate for a victory, but have the right pitcher on the mound to protect their tired bullpen. Quantrill should have what it takes to shutdown a Tigers lineup that bats only .216 against right-handed pitching. Detroit also has an overworked bullpen, but they will be leaning on a starter who can’t make it through the fifth inning in Hutchinson.
The Guardians are the better team here and they will be eager for a victory. My limit for MLB money lines is generally around -150. The Guardians are on the road here, guaranteeing we won’t get cut short of the run line by a walkoff. Let’s ride with the Cleveland run line at +115 odds.
Recommendation: Cleveland Guardians -1.5 (+115)
