Detroit Tigers vs San Diego Padres Analysis
The San Diego Padres begin a three game interleague series against the Detroit Tigers from Comerica Park on Monday evening. The Padres fell a game shy of a three game sweep with an 8-5 loss in New York against the Mets.
Meanwhile the Tigers suffered a two game sweep at the hands of the Minnesota Twins. The towering lefty Sean Manaea gets the nod for San Diego, while the right-handed journeyman Drew Hutchinson toes the rubber for Detroit. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST/4:10 PST.
Padres Playoff Push
The San Diego Padres came out of the break hot with wins in two of three games in New York against the Mets. However their record dropped to 54-43 after losing 8-5 on ESPN’s Sunday night game of the week.
Joe Musgrove fell short of expectations with four runs allowed on five hits in 5.1 innings of work. Manny Machado went 3 for 5 with an RBI double and Eric Hosmer went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI.
The Padres currently occupy the 2nd Wild Card spot, four games behind the Atlanta Braves and three games ahead of the St. Louis Cardinals. The Padres could use a boost offensively as they rank only 23rd in OPS, 18th in batting average and 16th in runs scored.
The 30 year-old southpaw Sean Manaea gets the start on Monday night for San Diego. Manaea has consistently churned out approximately six innings a game while allowing 2-4 runs. His last start was no different as he tossed six innings of three run baseball against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Tigers Drop Another Series
The Detroit Tigers can’t get this season over quickly enough and could be scrapped for whatever parts they might have at the trade deadline.
The Tigers have the second worst record in the American League at 38-58 after losing two straight games to the Minnesota Twins by a combined score of 17-5. In yesterday’s 9-1 loss starter Rony Garcia took the loss after allowing three runs in the first 2.2 innings of the game.
Catcher Eric Haase went 2 for 4 with the teams only RBI. Detroit consistently battles Oakland for dead last in every offensive category imaginable.
Reliever turned starter Drew Hutchinson draws the start for the Tigers on Monday night. He is 1-4 with a 4.46 ERA across 16 appearances, five of which being starts. He seems to be a 5-6 innings max type of guy at this point.
Detroit Tigers vs San Diego Padres Prediction
The San Diego Padres are heavy road favorites with a -165 money line, while the Detroit Tigers sit at +140 with a total of 8. This is actually a tough scheduling spot for San Diego, having to travel from New York after a nightcap.
However the Padres still hold a tremendous edge in talent with the motivation to secure a playoff spot. Manaea has four quality starts in his last five games and Hutchinson struggled going into the break. Let’s roll with San Diego, but for +105 odds on the run-line.
Prediction: San Diego Padres -1.5 +105
