Detroit Tigers vs San Diego Padres Analysis

The San Diego Padres and Detroit Tigers meet for the second of three games on Tuesday night from Comerica Park. The Tigers came out slugging in game one and prevailed with a tremendous 12-4 victory.

The Padres will be looking to bounce back and avoid losing as a heavy favorite for the second straight night. The rookie righty Garrett Hill draws the start for Detroit, while the veteran Mike Clevinger toes the rubber for San Diego. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST/4:10 PST.

Clevinger Looks To Right The Ship

The San Diego Padres struggled on Monday night as their pitching staff was hammered for 12 runs including four home runs.

Sean Manaea lasted only 3.1 innings and allowed eight runs (four earned) on nine hits. Leadoff man Jurickson Profar went 2 for 3 with a solo-blast.

The Padres have been successful with a 54-44 record, however they have struggled offensively. They are tied with the Baltimore Orioles for 21st in OPS, while averaging only 4.32 runs a game. On Tuesday evening they will hope Mike Clevinger can get them back on track.

He is 2-3 with a 3.50 ERA and 1.14 WHIP on the season. Clevinger was brilliant in his last outing as he held the Arizona Diamondbacks to one run on six innings.

King of the Hill

The Detroit Tigers have had one of the worst lineups in the majors all season long as they rank 29th in OPS while scoring only 3.13 runs per game. That wasn’t the case on Monday night as they smashed four homeruns on the way to crushing San Diego 12-4.

Jeimer Candelario had two of those blasts, while Miguel Cabrera and Eric Haase each had one. Drew Hutchinson gave up four runs in only 4.1 innings of work but the bullpen put the brakes on that scoring.

The young prospect Garrett Hill gets the nod on Tuesday night. He hasn’t had much success thus far with a 1-2 record and 5.63 ERA across three starts. However most of the damage was done in one outing and he held the Oakland Athletics to three runs in five innings last time out.

Detroit Tigers vs San Diego Padres Prediction

The San Diego Padres are favored with a money line of -190, while the Detroit Tigers sit at +160 with a total of 8.5. Neither team has been doing well offensively throughout the season, but have really struggled recently.

The Padres have averaged only 2.8 runs a game during their last five games, while Detroit scored only 2.4 per game during their last four. Relief pitching has been a strength for both teams as the Tigers rank 5th in ERA while the Padres rank 13th.

This game has under written all over it, especially if Clevinger and Hill can do their part. Comerica Park is a spacious pitchers park which should help the starters suppress these weak lineups.

Prediction: Under 8.5
