Detroit Tigers vs Texas Rangers Analysis
The Texas Rangers face off against the Detroit Tigers in the opener of a four game series at Comerica Park on Thursday evening. The Tigers are coming off a brutal sweep at the hands of the Chicago White Sox.
Meanwhile the Rangers dropped their last two games as well as the series against the Houston Astros. Young righty Beau Brieske gets the nod for Detroit, while veteran southpaw Martin Perez toes the rubber for Texas. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST/4:10 PST.
Toothless Tigers
The Detroit Tigers have displayed one of the weakest offensive attacks in recent history. The club ranks dead last with a pathetic 2.8 runs per game.
They also rank dead last in OPS and home runs, while ranking 28th in team batting average. They were shutout 13-0 in a demoralizing loss on Wednesday afternoon against the Chicago White Sox.
No Tigers hitter had a extra-base hit or multi-hit game. Alex Faedo was one to fade, giving up seven earned runs in only three innings. The bullpen wasn’t much better as they allowed an additional six runs.
Detroit hopes Beau Brieske can duplicate his last start where he pitched 5.2 shutout innings against a potent Blue Jays lineup. He is 1-5 on the season with a 4.34 ERA and 1.28 WHIP.
Ranging For Wins
The Texas Rangers have had a up and down session, as they started the season 2-10 and battled back to .500. They now occupy the #2 spot in the American League West, 9.5 games behind the Houston Astros with a 29-33 record.
They lost the last two games of a three game set against the Houston Astros, including a 9-2 loss last night. Corey Seager hit a solo blast and Koby Allard threw five innings of three run baseball in the middle of a bullpen game.
Texas needs to get their bats going as they rank 18th in runs scored, 23rd in batting average and 22nd in OPS. Martin Perez has been one of the few constants for the Rangers, with a 4-2 record and 2.18 ERA across 12 starts.
However, he is coming off his worst outing of the season as he allowed seven runs on 12 hits in only five innings of work.
Detroit Tigers vs Texas Rangers Prediction
The Texas Rangers are -155 road favorites, while the Tigers sit at +135 with a total of 8.5. Neither one of these teams has impressed so far this season but Texas has come around a little bit.
This Detroit offense just can’t put runs on the board and this should be a great get right spot for Martin Perez. The bats of Corey Seager and Marcus Semien should be able to generate some runs against Beau Brieske.
The Rangers are 7-1 in Perez’s last eight starts. It’s an ugly game and far from my favorite play on the board, but let’s make a small play on the Texas Rangers money line.
Prediction: Texas Rangers -155
