Arizona Diamondbacks vs Houston Astros Analysis
The Houston Astros visit the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field Tuesday night, with right-hander Luis Garcia going against veteran Madison Bumgarner.
Zac Gallen was scheduled to start, but got scratched because of a cut thumb. The club hopes he can start this weekend in New York when Arizona takes on the Mets.
Garcia Looking Forward to Future
The Astros got off to a great start taking three of four from the Angels. But like the D-Backs, their offense has also struggled – scoring just seven runs in three of the four games, and plating 13 runs on Friday night. Luis Garcia gets the start for Houston, and comes off a really good 2021 campaign with a 3.48 ERA and 1.18 WHIP.
He relies on a four-seam fastball in the low to mid-90s, and when you look at his game log has been a pretty consistent pitcher with very few poor outings.
That’s encouraging for a starter who’s only 25 years old. If Garcia can maintain or improve on his performance from last year, he has a bright future in the big leagues.
Diamondbacks Need a Boost on Offense
Arizona lost three of four to the Padres last weekend, and their offense didn’t put up a lot of runs. They only scored 11 runs in those four games, and eight of those came on two four-run ninth innings.
However, the pitching wasn’t bad the first three games, only giving up a combined 10 runs. If any team needed to get off to a good start in 2022, it was the Diamondbacks, who only won 52 games in 2021.
The good news for this club is that they have a lot of talent in their minor league system. But it will take another year or two for most of this talent to develop and be ready for “the show.”
Diamondbacks vs Astros Prediction
It looks like Arizona is kind of snakebit early in the year with the Gallen injury. Starting the season 1-3 with an anemic offense, combined with one of your best pitchers getting hurt in an accident at home isn’t a great way to start the season.
Especially coming off last year’s dismal campaign. The D-Backs have one of the best farm systems in MLB, and should see improvement in the next year or two.
But that doesn’t help them right now. Houston comes in with a good start to the season, and looks to be one of the best teams in the American League.
Prediction: Houston Astros Runline (-105)
