Diamondbacks vs Padres Analysis
Newly-acquired Padres LHP Sean Manaea goes against Arizona and RHP Merill Kelly. They’re two quality pitchers and it should be a great matchup. San Diego hopes to bounce back after Arizona’s Seth Beer hit a three-run walk-off home run to get the Opening Night win.
Shake it Off, San Diego
Yu Darvish made me eat my words about his previous poor outings at Chase Field, as he pitched six no-hit innings. Got to give a tip of the cap to you, Yu. However, the bullpen – Suarez and Stammen – gave up the two-run lead in the ninth inning, and wasted Darvish’s solid start.
Getting Sean Manaea was a major upgrade to the Padres starting pitching. The hard-throwing left-hander has a very good fastball and a quality slider, while his change-up is still considered by scouts as a work in progress. Switching from the American to the National League should provide an advantage, as this will be the first time most Arizona batters have faced him.
Even in a more hitter-friendly park like Chase Field, the Friars struggled at the plate, scoring just two runs on four hits. The 2, 3 and 4 hitters – Machado, Cronenworth and Voit – walked five times, which is a good sign they’re seeing the ball well… and/or opposing pitchers are pitching them carefully, and don’t want to make a mistake that’ll get hit out of the park.
Take Your Base
Madison Bumgarner had a decent start to the season, giving up one earned run in three innings. The bullpen held up really well, only giving up one run in six innings of work.
The D-Backs’ offense struggled for most of the game, with just three hits and four runs – all of them scored in the ninth inning. Peralta, Walker and Smith (3, 4 and 5 hitters) also walked five times, which is a good sign. Again, could be a result of them seeing the ball really well, and/or pitchers pitching them carefully.
Full-Season Betting Tip: For DFS and wagering purposes, a positive future indicator for a hitter is the number of walks he takes in a game. This means he’s seeing the ball really well, even if he isn’t getting a lot of hits. This can help you determine when a hitter could get out of a slump, and/or a slow start to the season.
Diamondbacks vs Padres Prediction
Both teams struggled at the plate on Opening Night, and facing two quality starters like Manaea and Kelly won’t help either offense. I’ll say it again: The shortened spring training seems to favor the pitchers over the hitters. The over/under is a little too high, and I see good value on the under here. At the time of posting, most books have the total set at 9 runs, but there’s a small handful of 9.5’s out there if you shop around.
