Diamondbacks vs Rockies Analysis

The Colorado Rockies visit Chase Field to play the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first of a three game set. Sinker-ball specialist Chad Kuhl gets the start against Merrill Kelly, in what should be a really good pitching matchup.

Rockies Preview

The Rox just took two of three at home from the Nationals, and won five of six on the recent homestand. Arizona comes off a seven game road trip where they swept three from the Marlins in Miami and split four games in St. Louis.

One of the best off-season moves that the Rockies made was signing former Pirates pitcher Chad Kuhl. Although he didn’t have great numbers in Pittsburgh, manager Bud Black liked what he saw in the right-hander and so far it’s paid off.

In four starts, Kuhl is 3-0 in 23.1 innings with a 1.90 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 17 strikeouts. He’s not an overpowering pitcher, but has done a good job of keeping the ball down in the zone and avoiding a lot of hard contact.

The Colorado offense is doing just fine, leading the league in OPS at .767 and team batting average at .263.

Diamondbacks Preview

Merrill Kelly had a really good month of April on the mound. In five starts and 28.2 innings of work, he has a 1.27 ERA and 1.02 WHIP with 26 strikeouts, giving up just four walks and no home runs.

The D-Back’s offense came to life this week in a really unlikely place: Miami. Arizona put up 18 runs in three games, so it looks like the offense is getting into regular season form.

Diamondbacks vs Rockies Prediction

The Rockies are on the road after six games at Coors Field, and Arizona plays their first game at home after a seven-game road trip. Kuhl and Kelly are two of the best starters in the National League, and it’s their first outing against the opposing teams. That’s why I like the 1st 5 innings under.

Prediction: 1st 5 innings Under Total Runs Scored
