The Pulse: Daily MLB Betting Picks for Monday, August 7
Cubs at Mets Prediction
CUBS (+100) at METS (-120), 7:10 p.m. ET, Total: 8.5/9
New York punted on the season in dealing Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer, so their new ace takes the mound with Kodai Senga (7-6, 3.25 ERA) taking the hill. He gave up a season-high 11 hits in his first start after the trade deadline, losing 4-0 t0 Kansas City. The Japanese righty will be facing the Cubs for the second time. Current Chicago players are 6-for-22 against him with a pair of doubles. Senga gave up three runs in five innings in a 4-2 loss to the Cubs on May 24.
Drew Smyly (8-7, 4.71) has been brutal of late but the Cubs have rescued him in winning their last three games when he’s started. Smyly has allowed four or more runs in four of his last five starts. He did beat the Mets on May 23, allowing two runs in five innings in a 7-2 win. Current Mets are batting .250 against Smyly, with Brandon Nimmo faring best in going 5-for-13. Pete Alonso is 4-for-12 with a pair of homers against Smyly.
THE PLAY –
Mets Player Prop Pick:
Alonso has hit safely in 12 of 16 games and has a solid history against Smyly, making him a solid play in this contest. Ride New York slugger Pete Alonso to top his runs +hits + RBIs number.
Rockies at Brewers Prediction
ROCKIES (+195) at BREWERS (-245), 8:10 p.m. ET, Total: 8.5
The Brewers have only been this heavy a favorite twice this season and have gone 1-1 as a favorite of more than -240. The Rockies have had a rough season but aren’t devoid of talent, so it’s hard to recommend backing Milwaukee even with Freddy Peralta (7-8, 4.46) on the mound. Peralta has allowed no runs in two of his last four starts, has a 13-strikeout outing and a 10-strikeout outing over his last five outings and is looking like his old self after a rocky start to this campaign. Current Rockies are hitting
just 4-for-22 against him, which includes All-Star catcher Elias Dias going just 1-for-6.
Colorado counters with Peter Lambert (2-2, 5.07), who didn’t allow a run in 14 innings in July but got
roughed up for four runs in 4.1 innings in his start against the Padres this month. He’s been better this season than he has in the past but regression to the mean seems inevitable, especially given how he fared against San Diego. However, current Brewers are just 1-for-7 against him.
THE PLAY – Brewers Player Prop Bet:
Call it a hunch, but we recommend riding the over on Andruw Montaserio’s runs + hits + RBIs since he’s 0-for-8 over his last three games. Look for him to break out of his slump.
Rangers at Athletics Prediction
RANGERS (-220) at A’S (+180), 9:40 p.m. ET, Total: 8.5
In a surprise move, Dane Dunning (9-4, 3.14) stayed in the newly fortified Rangers rotation instead of lefty Martin Perez, who was banished to the bullpen. Dunning has been solid this season but probably is on
a short leash if he can’t continue to give the team solid performances. The Rangers won their sixth consecutive game on Sunday, taking down the Marlins to finish off a sweep. Unfortunately, they lost All-Star Josh Jung to a broken thumb on Sunday when he was hit by a line drive at third base. He had been solid on both sides of the ball, so this is a tough loss. Texas is a little too banged up to lay this much juice with, especially since the only responsible play would be the run line. That said, current A’s are batting just .205 against Dunning (8-for-39), with Seth Brown doing the bulk of the damage since he’s 4-for-10.
The A’s bounced back from being swept by the Dodgers by taking a pair of games from the Giants. Considering they were outscored 25-6 by L.A. and have been dreadful most of the season, their success this weekend came out of nowhere. Lefty Ken Waldichuk (2-7, 6.52) will look to extend the winning streak to three games but hasn’t pitched more than five innings in any of his last 15 appearances, be it starts or bullpen appearances. The Rangers are 12-for-37 against him, with Adolis Garcia coming in 2-for-2 with a homer and a double.
THE PLAY – Rangers Player Prop Pick:
Garcia has a pair of extra base hits against Waldichuk and went 2-for-4 on Sunday, hitting a home run. He’s batting .421 this month and has gotten a hit in 10 of 11 games. Ride Texas’ Adolis Garcia to top his runs + hits + RBI prop.
