Giants vs Athletics Analysis
The Oakland Athletics visit Oracle Park to play the San Francisco Giants Tuesday night in the first of a two-game series. It’s a really good starting pitching matchup with right-hander Dauton Jeffries going against southpaw Carlos Rodon.
Athletics Reliant Upon Starting Pitching
The A’s have exceeded expectations to start 2022, with a 9-8 record. A big reason for the Athletics’ success early in the year has been their starting rotation.
They’ve pitched well and fairly deep into games, with a combined 64 starter innings through Sunday’s action – which is 2nd-best in MLB.
This means you have a more well-rested bullpen, which increases the odds of a better performance when they’re called on. Their pitching staff is the 9th best in team ERA at 3.31 and a 1.20 WHIP.
The A’s will need them to throw well if the offense stays mired in its recent slump. After starting the season with excellent run production, team OPS has now dropped to .619 (23rd-best) and batting average is a meager .209. And they’ve only scored 11 runs in their last six games.
Daulton Jeffries doesn’t have overpowering stuff, but has pitched very well in his first three starts of the year. In 15.1 innings of work he compiled a 1.17 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, giving up 12 hits and three walks, while striking out nine.
Rondon in Midseason Form
San Francisco comes into this game with an 11-5 record and a three-game winning streak. The Giants have the 2nd largest run differential in baseball, outscoring their opponents by 37 runs. They have a 13th-best OPS at .697 and a .241 team batting average.
Carlos Rodon was a great acquisition by the Giants from the White Sox. He’s brought the heat in his first three starts with a 2-0 record, 1.06 ERA and 29 strikeouts – that’s almost 10 per game.
And the Giants pitching staff has got off to a tremendous start, with a 2nd-best ERA of 2.42 and staff WHIP of 1.10.
Giants vs Athletics Prediction
Oakland is really struggling at the plate, and this game features two of the best starting pitchers in baseball in Jeffries and Rodon.
The Giants are coming off an 11-game road trip in Cleveland, New York, Washington and a Monday make-up game in Milwaukee.
A good handicapping rule of thumb is to fade a team playing at home for the first game after an extended road trip. But it’s tough to go against a team with some of the best pitching in baseball, and a really good manager in Gabe Kapler.
I don’t think we’ll see a lot of runs scored in the game, especially with these starters. That’s why I like the 1st 5 innings under the run total.
Prediction: Under 1st 5 Innings Run Total
