Giants vs Athletics Analysis
The Oakland A’s visit Oracle Park for the last of a two-game set with the streaking San Francisco Giants. Right-hander Paul Blackburn takes the mound versus Sam Long, in what looks to be a bullpen game for the Giants. The A’s are looking for a series split, as they dropped Tuesday’s opener 8-2.
Oakland Not Looking Athletic
How bad is the Oakland A’s offense right now? It’s “stru-gl-ing,” as Joe Namath said in his infamous drunken interview with Suzy Kolber.
The A’s got five hits off Giants pitchers, took three walks and struck out 15 times. All numbers tell a story, and these offensive numbers tell us that Oakland hitters aren’t seeing the ball real well. They’ve slumped to 25th in team OPS at .612 and team batting average of .207.
The starting rotation has to pitch well to keep games close into the middle and later innings. If they don’t, their odds of winning aren’t very good.
That’s what happened on Tuesday night, as starter Daulton Jeffries gave up five runs in the first three innings – and that was plenty for San Fran to get the W. When a baseball team can’t score a lot of runs, it can put a lot of pressure on their starting pitcher and relievers.
A’s starter Paul Blackburn has pitched very well in his first three starts. In 15.0 innings of work he’s compiled a 1.80 ERA, 0.80 WHIP, struck out 14, allowed 11 hits and just one walk.
Bullpen Game On Deck for Giants
The Giants are playing some really good baseball in 2022, with a record of 13-5. A lot of analysts (including yours truly) thought this team was due for some negative regression from last year’s 107-win season. But the team by the Bay told us (as Lee Corso would say): “Not so fast, my friend.”
Timely hitting, solid pitching from the starting rotation and bullpen combined with good decisions by manager Gabe Kapler has produced great results. And the bad news for other NL West teams?
One of (if not the) best players on the roster, Lamonte Wade Jr., is on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento, and scheduled to return to the parent club sometime next week.
The Giants will start southpaw reliever Sam Long Wednesday night. He’s only thrown 5.2 innings in six appearances, with the longest outing at 2.0 innings. It looks like this will be a bullpen game, and based on their relievers’ numbers, is a pretty good thing. San Francisco’s bullpen has the lowest ERA in the majors at 1.70.
Giants vs Athletics Prediction
I don’t need to crunch a lot of numbers for my best bet today. Sometimes it’s really simple and you don’t need to overthink it.
The Athletics aren’t hitting that well or scoring many runs, and need their starting pitching and bullpen to excel in order to have a chance to win. The Giants are playing really good baseball, whether it’s on the road or at home. Give me the Giants on the moneyline.
Prediction: San Francisco Giants Moneyline
